Lost one of my best hounds recently.....
Sciaretta's Groom Creek Clyde passed away a week ago and has made me rethink h0w soon I make future crosses to keep the blood in my kennel. Till now I have been staggering crosses about 1 every other year but now I am kicking myself beause my best male is dead and I have only 1 litter out of him and never collected him.
I plan to make two crosses here in the next year staggering them 1 in the fall and 1 next spring so I can at least keep some of the females in the woods. I'm not sure which two and if so I plan to keep 2 pups from each for myself and then place the a few if I can before selling the balance. All the hounds I have listed below are hunters, if they weren't they would not get bred.

Sorry to hear of your loss Scott.
I know where you are coming from. My Scarlett is the last of my line bred Piute Mtn line. I haven't bred her the last 2 summers cause I haven't had time to raise a litter. She is 8 this year and I am really hoping that I will get a litter out of her and the male I sold Onza who is out of her sire Charlie. Ozzy is 1/2 Piute Mtn 1/2 Meecham. My second choice in a stud would be a pup out of my old Sandy dog who was Scarlett's littermate, Sully who is 1/2 Piute Mtn 1/2 Hoffmeister.
You never know when one is going to go and sometimes it is best to get a pup out of them when you can. I am just hoping I will be able to make this cross and have a successful litter.
I think you should do the crosses as you and only you know what you may get by making it. Good luck and again sorry to hear.

Thanks Tessa...I agree. I like to wait till the hounds have proven that they themselves are hunters before using them and right now every hound I mentioned above is either highly experienced in cougar or bear or both. Roadblock is not a big gamer but has sired many that have become big gamers.
Clyde has just completed his 3rd season and was on his way to smokin all the rest. I was smart enough to cross him last winter on gypsy and could not be happier with the cross but the pups are still only 9 months and have alot to prove yet.
Make that cross on your female before its too late, there are no excuses I have come to find out......

breeding number 2 is the one buddy. i have said this time and time again, SIS is a hell of a bear dog. don't need to say anymore about her she is a good one. when spanky does this breeding these will be some good pups. i have had the pleasure to hunt sis all summer on bear and she is fantastic. a track driving tree pounding machine. faster than any of my dogs and stuck with some mean bear on the ground for hours and had to pull her off the bear and she didn't have a scratch on her. very smart in all areas. these will be good ones.

Yea Joe your right on that one. I will take her on Roadblock next time she comes in which should be November. That will still give me all December to run her on bobcat and cougar and then she can lay up, have her pups, whelp and still be in the tail end of the cougar season and be ready for spring bear
The other cross I am leaning on will be Jazz and Gunny next spring. That will give me Jazz for thw whole cougar season and she can sit out the bear season since I have Sis and Gunny filling her void.

Its been a lousy spring and summer in this house but we plan to turn things around.
Sis has been in wisconsin all summer running bear and doing a great job. Gunny and Shot have been with her. Shot and sis are coming home and getting ready for the upcoming cougar season. I'm shipping Shot down to Casey to hunt the winter and get collected while I will be breeding Sis when she comes in.
Jazz will be crossed on Gunny in the spring after she trains Max and Sky this winter on cougars and bobbies. Its a hitch in my plans with the lose of Clyde but I believe Max will do a good job taking over for Clyde along with Gunny and Shot once they are turned over to cougars.
I also have spoke with Coop to get Roxy back up her once there bear season is done so all in all things find a way to work out.

pup
Spanky-
I'm the guy that bought Clyde's 7 month pup, 'PR Lillards Rebel Kodyak' from up at Hamilton. I'd be up to either trade breeding for a started female or old, dead broke cat dog (age doesn't matter, just a good dog that'll train Kody)...or stand him for $300.

Sorry I missed this Jake. I spoke with the young man you got Kodiak from just a few minutes too late after I was told he was in the craigslist. I will pm you and maybe we can work something out.
This weekend I did some training with the young hounds and was pretty happy. Max and Sky are out of Clyde and my Gypsy female, they are just 9 months now and perfect age for the upcoming winter season. They have a ways to go but should have a good winter behind my jazz and bailey females.
Sky
Gunny and Shot are the two brothers out of Tonys Clover semen and they are doing pretty good also. Both these hounds lived on a chain the first 2 years of there life. Gunny has progressed quicker then shot and Gunny is still in wisconsin chasing bears right now. I had shot brought home and I am training him here and soo far soo good. He is not as advanced as his brother but he seems to be a quick study so far. These two will also be ready to go this winter.
