RedShilo,

Most intersting I must say and I beleive every word.

Nothing in nature is set in stone and the more you spend out there the more you find yourself scratching your head. Not to worry, 25-30 some bear a year provides adequate entertainment for both you and the dogs. I have freinds who may tree that many in a month and others who may not tree that many in two years but they are still most gratefull everytime they hear the pack leave at full cry .

Post by mike martell »

IKE, THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT. I WAS HESITANT TO WRITE THAT BUT IT WAS VERY TRUE, I WAS WAITING FOR SOME ONE TO CALL B.S. ON THAT ONE ,YEP...NOW THE REST OF THE STORY. I TREED AROUND 250 CAREER BEARS WITH THAT DOG AND WHEN BANNED HERE IN OREGON, I SOLD MY TWO BEAR DOGS. LATER ON THAT FEMALE ENDED UP WITH TRAVIS STIREK.

If a test would come out to prove that dogs can tell male from female I would bet money they can. I had a good dog up until he got killed this summer. Whenever we would turn loose on two track male and female together he would always tree the tom. A few times we turned in on a female and got to the tree and he had a big old tom up there. We got to one tree and he had a big tom bayed up on the ground until the cat saw us then headed up the tree.

Theres no mistaking a 168 lb lion track. On this cat we turned loose on a female and found him with this at the tree. The other dogs showed up at the tree about a half hr after we got there. We dont know if they had the female treed or if they were just running late. If you click on the pic you can see his 40lb black ass. He sure will be missed this year.

the ability to distinguish a male from a female ? i saw that some 25 years back in the bird dog woods. i hunted with two guys, one had a german short hair cull dog. the other a stylish britney. after hunting behind the cull dog my friend with the britney invited me to hunt over his dog. this dog was cool. she would get birdy. than just quit and go on. i asked my friend if she just lost the bird? he said no there wern't no roosters in that bunch, so the dog is going on?what the hell? when the dog went on point. my buddy said get ready to shoot, i will flush this bird and it will be a rooster?we went on to take my bag limit of two roosters. that is not many birds maybe just luck? i only hunted once behind this dog but she pointed only roosters. another hard pill to swallow but on that particular day that is what i saw. another friend had a trashy hound that ran elk. he caught and bayed only the bulls. if you think about how rank bull's are there is probably a parallel in most all species of wildlife.
