loosing bears
If 4 dogs had a large bear caught on the ground would the bear just walk along and just not go up the tree. The 4 dogs sounded like they had it caught but they were moving slow. We finally decided to go in and when we got in there the dogs came to us. Could the bear of lost the dogs if they had it on the ground or is it possible that they never jumped the bear at all and was just cold trailing the whole time. We ran off a bait that had been hit over the night. The dogs opened right up at the bait and moved out quick. This was right at daylight. I'm just confused as to what happened or could have happened.

They could of been walking him, some bear will test what kind of dog power there up against. If the dogs don't get in and put the teeth on him he will walk right out of the country. To get your dogs to handle this type of bear you will have to get in and help them. Some dogs can handle this type of bear bear and others will give up the chase.

well thats what i was kinda thinking happened but ive never seen a dog just give up. the dogs that were running are pretty tired and beat up from this season. friend just bought 4 bear dogs and they have been run hard all season long. the season ends in a few days and were done so i guess we will have to wait till next year to find out. maybe they will be rested by then and not give up so easy. thank you

just wondering
robbyson99, you don't happen to live in wolf country do you? Reason I ask, is wolves are known to feed off bear baits and some dogs will end up acting about the way you described...sounding bayed up briefly then quit.
Something we have had problems with (mostly the young dogs) is the dogs going to a bear bed and barking as if they are looking at it and then when we walk in they leave and or come back. I can't explain exactly what's going on but it drove me crazy until I started looking around and finding where they had bedded down. Whether or not that's what it is I don't know but, I think (someone else can tell me if I'm wrong) that the bear scent is strong in that bed and they go crazy over it. Now the older dogs will most times move the track on past the bed but the younger dogs hang up alot.

i do believe there is wolves up there but i dont think there are enough for us to actually run into them. the bait was destroyed when we put the dogs on it. had been hit that night. we dont have any young dogs right now. a guy i know bought a pack of four walkers. theyve been on a lot of bear and were pretty beat up. the dogs had cuts all over them but seemed strong so we tried to run them. i think the youngest is 4. they hit that bait and were gone out of hearing in a matter of 5 minutes or so and we had to move. looking at the dogs now and knowing that dogs will give up on a bear im thinking thats what they did. the only reason i think this now that its been brought to my attention is because they were in ruff shape. and very tired. the guy that they were bought from said he put them on almost 30 bears in 3 and a half weeks. sounds kinda crazy to me to even do that to a pack of hounds. and they hadnt seen a kill the entire time. the guy said that he didnt shoot any bears out to them and they really needed a kill. im new to this bear hunting thing but im thinking we need to get some younger dogs in there next year with a few of the older hounds. and i think things will be different. thank you guys for your help and opinions.
