wet cat food and canned sardines work best for me. You can find both at the local gas station as well so it is easy to find.

Marshmellows and Syrup in a live trap. Works like a dream. irondave is right though if you don't set it in the right location your not catching anything. Location, location, location.

There is something wrong with the trap design, or you are not setting it right. do you have a pet cat you could observe going in the trap for it's food? maybe you can figure out what is happening.

try tripping the pan with light preasure from a stick. If it is too hard to trip you will have to adjust the door hook etc to get it to trip easier, like depress the pan part way so the hook is on more of a hair trigger. YOu have to find a balance though because coon will sometimes climb on top of the trap befor they go in.

If the pan is too narrow, a larger coon might be able to grab the bait can with his mouth or "hands" without tripping it. IF so, enlarge the pan area with a small peice of 1/4" plywood, or welded wire like what the pan is already made of. Dont make it too big though, depending on the size of the trap, a big coon can back out if the door comes down on his back.

Check the wire on the back too, on some of the cheeper traps, a big coon can push the back wire off after he is caught. I have had it happen. Just re-enforce it with wire or hog rings along the edges.

Next, attatch your bait to the cage with wire so what ever it is will have to fight to get it off, and will put good preasure on the pan. You could attatch something on the floor and/or up in the top against the back and the top (ear of sweet corn or what ever), yet sheild it from being stolen from the outside. You can do this with screen or 1/2" mesh attatched firmly with it's own wire or extra wire.

as was mentioned, culverts under highways etc are deadly locations. You can drive down the road and actually spot the ones that are being used by trails in the grass or dirt etc. Likely culverts will have travel routes associated with them like a ditch through a feild with bushes and trees along it, or a woodlot on one side and a corn feild or water on the other side, etc.

You'll get him. Just make sure your trap is working and keep trying different stuff.

DMX my favorite live trap for coons comes from Terry Montgomery in Utah. His web site is montgomeryfur.com I like the Bridger 12x12x36 the best. They are easy to set very sturdy and have crisp triggers, they have mesh around the bait site so the animal has to enter the trap to get the bait. When I make my sets I bed them firm in the dirt so they dont wobble and there is no wire showing on the bottom just dirt I also like to place it next to something solid on one side that is stationary to create kind of a funnel.I Like to use tuna in water but you will sometimes catch a cat or a skunk. Good Luck!

A lot of good info so far from everyone. I own a nuisance wildlife control company and trap around 200 coons a year. I only use Safeguard traps because they are the best made. Never had a single escape ever. The traps have smaller mesh around the entire back end of the trap to prevent any critter from reaching in and grabbing the bait. I use the trap with the sliding rear door, makes it easy to set baits in longer traps and also to transfer critters from one trap to another. Havahart traps and Tomahawk traps are junk and their customer service is horrible. I currently own about 200 traps and everyone of them is a Safeguard.
Only other advise I can give you is to never set a coon trap on the ground if you have skunks in the area. Just set it up off the ground 8-10 inches. Skunks can't climb.
