dog box air vents

Post by jlyman »

Just got done building my first box made it out of plywood and was wondering how many vents I need to put in the thing for air. It is 4x4x30 split in half. I was going to put a 3" vent on the side and the back on each half is that going to be enough.

Thanks
Jim

That depends on what the temp. will be when you are hunting. I like to have more vents on it and then be able to open and close them as weather dictates. If that is all you will have in it, in the summer in wis. when it gets to be 90 degs. you will end up with dead dogs.My dog box has 3 holes in the front that are 6" x 8" two on each side that are the same size, all three doors in the back are 9" x 13" that are just bars.In the summer there are days when this isn't enough air movement.

thank you we get about the same here in the summer but winters are cold so I guess I will find a way to make them so they will shut when moving from spot to spot.

im with wi walkerman-- you wont need much vent in the winter- you cant have too much in the summer

how many dogs -whats the temp- moving down the road or stopped - etc
id guess that two 3 inch holes is ok for one dog on a side in the winter

if you open box in winter and its sorta steamy-- need more vents
in the summer , i want is as open as i can get it without dogs getting out --

if i dont know, id rather have too much air then not enuff - we use a box just like that in the winter for 2 dogs -with one 6 inch hole on the side and a screened opening on doors - openings have an adjustable closure -
we shut them part way when traveling -
or its 20 below -

at times weve had 4 dogs in there , i dont think that box has enuff ventilation with everything open for 4 dogs -

dont make your divider air tite , i leave an inch top and bottom open
when the tailgate drops

Thanks pete
This box will really only be used in the fall and winter. I guess i will have to build a new one for the summer. I used to just use two of the plastic ones. As far as the temp it will most of the time be 20* and lower so not for sure what the wind chill will and 70 mph but sure it is cold. But thanks for input i will be putting more adjustable vents

Thanks
Jim

If you're building these boxes as your first boxes, heres something I learned. Unless you have exceptionally large dogs, 30 inches is to tall. It will encourage them to crap in the box and encourage fights. I only build mine 24 inches tall max.
