Whatever it is this little area seems to be its toilet..

Keep in mind this picture is taken down in the SouthWest desert of New Mexico.

Ain't a ringtail, and I doubt if it's a chulo they are pretty indiscriminate about these details sorta like their cousin the coon, whenever and wherever. Might be a dog fox Cameron could tell us for sure, fire him a PM you know them lawyers are good at checking out sign especially when they are an expert at setting the trap. LOL!

Mike,

All the white color means is that whatever put it there was eating strictly meat.

I always thought the white stuff was produced after eating mostly bone. Like when a lion is finishing up a kill or a coyote is scavenging old left overs. I have had my own dogs leave white stuff too if they eat alot of bone. Only had this happen a few times when dogs killed Javalina in the orchard and I didn't know till they ate most of them. ( don't feed my poor dogs only bones on purpose, but I did wander why they all suddenly stoped eating thier dog food lol...)

I too think its either fox or coyote due to them leaving it in same area each night as a marking. ( also cats will usualy scratch abit even if they don't fully cover it) I can't tell on size in the pictures but fox is around 1/2 inch in diameter and coyote should be a bit bigger up to an inch. Also foxes and coyotes will eat alot of vegitation mostly acorns, juniper berries and other high quality stuff like that. Cats don't.

Ringtails can also stack thier poop up.. but its alot smaller 1/4 inch in diameter.. they usualy put thiers up in high areas like tree stumps or tops of boulders.

It might be the bones instead of the meat, although I have seen my dogs manure turn white when I am pretty sure that there was little to no bone in their feed because it had been thru a grinder.

The main point is that it turns white when the animal is on a strictly carnivorous diet. If the animal is eating any vegatable matter, it will tend keep the manure from turning white.

Therefore, it would seem to me that if all of the older manure is white and the fresh manure is turning white, it is probably a cat of some kind. If some of the older manure is white and some is not, it is probably not a cat.

To my knowledge, H2O consumption has no effect on the color of the manure.
