Noise Complaint

Post by Moonshiner »

Alright so a copper paid me a visit tonight, telling me that if I didnt find a way to shut my dogs up, id be cited and taken to court. When asked what I should do to deal with the dogs, he suggested and i quote "Bark Collar, and or "Talk to the Vet""
My roomate gave me a heads up bought this cop and the fact he was a jerk, so when he rolled by bout 20mins ago I was not in the mood. After he told me to bark collar my hounds i bout flipped on him and ran him off my property, he wasnt pleased and vowed to be back with a citation the next time, which he had already mentioned before being led off the property, so i didnt aggravate the situation.
A bit of a background on this: I live right on the edge of the county line, and the house and large backyard borders several fields which are filled with deer, rabbits, and cats.

Soo, having prefaced my problem, how should I deal with the dogs, short of burning down my neighbors houses so they have no place to live, thus no place to complain. Oh and did I mention that I live in a town of 4000, which is a logging town, and most would label it redneck, so im lost. Oh and they can cite me all they want but i aint paying, since I dont have the cash flow to pay ridiculous claims.

most towns have city or county ordinances for disturbing the peace. I know here it is 10pm till 6am anything that happens during the day is a civil matter between neighbors.

I got tired of the complaints so when I built the new shop the hounds are now kenneled indoors so no more reason for the complaints. I did the bark collars for awhile, its hard to keep a bored hound occupied.

well the hounds get let out at 9am and are in by 6pm, so apparently theres some ordinance different. Im going to go and talk to the cops tomorrow, and then im going to talk to my neighbors who are having a problem, and find out why they are so bothered, since there are other dogs that bark, even through the night.

Ok...chew me up and spit me out but here's my thoughts on barking and ordinances and curtousy to neighbors....
Years ago before I got hounds I had neighbors with 5 dogs that did nothing but bark nonstop all day long while they were at work. It was flippen miserable and everyday I plotted in my mind how to poisen these damn dogs though I never could have or would have! But I HATED them and did throw a few rocks here and there when I could get away with it! People from blocks around would come with video cameras in hand to file complaints. But we were out of city limits so very little done. I still hate those damn dogs to this day though I moved away!
Now that I have 2 hounds of my own and though pretty good about barking and have pretty good neighbors--it annoys the hell out of me to hear my own dogs barking at the wind in a kennel. And I don't allow it and am consistant with bark collars. I hated it when I had neighbors with no respect or concern for me and I do all I have to to show my neighbors now respect and NOT having to listen to my dogs! They didn't ask for me as a neighbor nor my dogs...if they wanted the bs noise they would have their own is how I think of it. I've got hounds all around me in a 5 mile vicintity and I can hear them pretty loud and clear on some days...I just choose if I can to not let mine be one of the 'noise'. But then again--I only have 2 hounds and even though I am out of city limits--I still try to respect my neighbors after living next door for 5 years to ones that NEVER gave me or anyone else a second thought when it came to their dogs barking nonstop!
I do go out to see what my dogs are barking at...if a cat cruises across my property I let them go until it is out of sight. Then they have to shut up. But if they are barking at the neighbor changing pipes, or just bored and want out...collars are on. The wind blows too much here for my patience and listening to my own dogs...let alone thinking the neighbors will want to. Not everyone wants to listen to the sound of hounds...and ya gotta admitt---they echo for miles! It's what one wants. But there is also a place and time one wants also. They are never always going to be quiet...it's just not their nature. I just think everything should be tried if can be because of neighbors that won't appreciate it.
Good luck. I have been to your town and ya it is small and rural. And even if your dogs are barking, most likely you are being held accountable for others around you also. Hope it works out ok and you can figure something out with neighbors. And a cocky cop...ya gotta love those small towns huh? !!!!

OKay been there done that. What happened to me was when I was living in town (Buffalo, Wyoming) I had 3 hounds and a litter of pups. My dogs were very quiet in town and I kept them in the back where there was not much to get them riled up. One day I was away from the house, but I was riding my horse by and I noticed that the city had workers out back of my house by the creek. My hounds were not barking, but a Border Collie next door was barking at the lads working. When the cop came later that afternoon to give me a ticket for barking dogs I said "no it was the neighbors dog that was barking not mine." I told him I witnessed this as I was riding my horse and saw it for myself. I was still issues a ticket. I decided to fight it in court. The court threw it out cause the person who complained did not show up to state their case. So if you get a ticket I suggest fighting it. If the neighbor who complained does not show their face in court it will be thrown out.

I also found out that the chief of police in Buffalo was anti-hound and that is why the cop insisted it was my dogs barking and issued me a ticket. I do not live in Buffalo, Wyoming anymore.

well my dogs dont bark all day, they bark at the occasional critter and when its gone its done. There are alot more annoying dogs barking than mine. And I do not like it when my hounds bark either, but i think its a serious (Female dog) move to complain to the cops, a serious one! If I have a problem with someone I tell them about it, and it gets resolved cause im a man, no some little kid who hides in his house and complains to the authorities, Its not like im flying a Swastiza over my house and have cross burnings, im understand its annoying, but so is listening to the neighbors yappy kick-dogs, and the other neighbors annoying pack of labs, along with the lady who doesnt get her dang belt fixed in her suburban, the fella who believes that everyone needs to hear his sup'd up Volvo roar to life, or the little brats dunking on a noisy basketball hoop.
I Will not put on bark collars cause it kills the dogs spirit, you know how I know this, cause the redbone I adopted had a bark collar on him, and it too him 2 whole months to speak again, course now all he does is whine, but im dealing with that.
Ill just kennel the hounds while im gone and set up a outside speaker system to hammer the neighbors with the sounds of a dying rabbit, im just pissed at these little cowards. grrr.

You can teach your dogs not to bark without no bark collars, seems like the logical thing to do  . there are some past posts on here that go into more detail

Well now I have another thought on a same but different note....my dogs were barking and went out to yell at---only to find 'new' neighbors of about a month that live maybe 7 car lengths down my driveway from me with their music BLARING with Metallica....now A...I hate metallica...B...it's a flippen Tuesday night! And C...I can hear in my house, let alone dogs barking! No collars this time....there is no reason or rhyme in that. But I have to ask....what is the difference? Sure they are human and have control...I can talk face to face with and complain. But do I walk down and tell them this is not ok for me? Tonight? I hate their music? Why do they have to have their door open to blare out of? Am I supposed to say 'ok'....cause they are young and their day off and I just listen to and deal with?
Hmmmm...my thoughts the same about my dogs barking...do I expect my neighbors to understand? Cause they are young...cause a guy is changing pipes or deer walk by? Or some idiot with his music blared for a good 1/4 mile to hear? For me...as far as my dogs...HELL NO! If they are baying up a pipe changer then I've got some problems...same as a damn deer behind in the neighbor's pasture.
I understand thoughts of why not...I also understand getting blammed for all dogs barking around. I guess I just choose to take 'myself' and my dogs out of all of the blam game around and do what I can with my own. And I do believe a bark collar can be just as abused as a shock collar. And I do not leave on all day or everyday. I also see no point in using if I do not connect with my dog at an exact moment as to why I am putting on and they figure out why I am putting on. I don't even own a shock collar...haven't felt the need yet. Sure one day soon I will need to...but not yet today. And hope when that day comes I don't lose my mind and get over stupid and abuse and only use when needed. I've got use of one...just found other ways of breaking bad habits so far and working well with my dogs so far. Probably won't always be the case cause they are still young and I can tell gonna move past my experience! Then gonna have to deal with accordingly.
Neighbors are as such...mine right now with music blaring or your dogs, their dogs....guess one just has to deal with in each situation. I do hope you get things figured out and do know what you mean---my friend lives 7 miles out of town and his neighbors dogs bark all day long non stop and he is getting blammed with his hounds. His do bark but nothing like those do all around him. And no one is coming to his door but to doors around him and he feels the same as you do. Mine have came to my door worrying when I had on chains getting wound up and maybe not able to get to water? I let them out every day so I know the exact reach...guess I have to say I've got pretty good neighbors all around. Hope you can work things out with yours. Take a dog with you when you go to talk...sometimes if someone gets introd to a 'new' dog or something they are not familiar with...it helps. People can't understand what they do not know...even and especially about dogs. And especially hunting dogs I am learning...hounds anyway. Hope you get things resolved soon!

:D Thanks.. That post made my day..

I can't stand barking dogs at home, or when we go to an event of some kind and it's just a Bark fest.. Not out of my box.
