Anybody ever had a coon drown a dog???

Lost a dog last night. He caught the coon out in the middle of a pond and the coon put him under.

Oh well what do you do...keep huntin I guess.

I haver seen it happen before and usually when the dog is really tired and been swimming trying to get the good for a good while.Many times this will happen when you get 2 or 3 dogs swimming around the coon and about the timer one dog gets ahold of him and want to head for shore to kill him another dog will jerk him lose and they have to start all over. I had a little redbone bitch named Dolly many years ago that was a streak on the track and a coon catcher. She caught a big old Montana boar coon one night in a stock pond and about the time I got there I saw him up on her neck and collar and down she went. He was nearly as big as her and much better in the water. It was freezing cold but I jerked off my boots and was wading towards the frackus when the coon releaded and swam for thew other side. As he waded out and hustled for the tules I peppered his butt with my 22. Dolly was just over matched. I had a big old black and tan named Gunsmoke who was an ace on coon and even in the wicked Green River he would swip up to them circle them one time fake to the left or right and boom! he had their whole head in his mouth and off for shore that big footed rascal would swim. Once on shore you could hear the bones pop and it was all over. He was a killer and the vetran of well over a thousand coons when an 18 wheeler sent him to the happy hunting ground on a rainy highway in Mississippi while trailing a con there. He lived a long life however and no coon was too much for him.

Sorry to hear about your dog, but you are right just keep after them masked bandits.

It happens quite often. A big coon in deep water is bad news for a dog. Those bastards really know how to use the water in their favor

I am sorry to hear about your dog. A few weeks ago while hog hunting we had a young dog get after a coon on the bank of a creek and before I knew it there were several dogs trying to catch it in the creek and it about drowned three grown cur dogs. I hadn't ever seen anything like it and it made wonder about coon hunters and how their dogs do it. I would really like to have a good coon dog but I would hate to see that going on with one dog.

Matt, it happens but only a few times in a life time of hunting. I have a dog that will bring them back like a Retriever bringing back a Duck.
You have a much higher chance of losing dogs hog hunting.
If you want a good coon dog go for it. JTG

sry 2 haer that. ive nt lost a dog but may have if i hadnt been so close to the beaver pond when they desided they needed 2 make me swim out after them

sorry to hear you lost your dog- - i never lost one but ive seen it very close , twice-

once ,,water was shallow and i was able to wade out and help dog ,the other time it was deep water and i couldnt do anything but watch-and thats worse -


unless you can swim with a coon attached to your head--or a dog and a coon - i wouldnt advise swimming to help your dog --



ive seen about the same deal with bear n dogs- bear on a cattail hump and dogs swimming round n round- way out in the swampy end of huge lake - we were watching with scope-

we were lucky that day too -

I am sorry about your dog. I hope he was not one you had grown very close to. It is always tough loosing a dog, but some are sure tougher to let go of than others. Hopefully you had more than one good dog.
