Sad day...

Post by houndcrazyfool »

Just turned my dogs out this morning to hunt a small canyon and clean out and the three young dogs leaped off a 35 foot cliff when i called them back to me... The first two made it out ok and my best dog plunged all the way to the flat and dislocated her hip. We just got back from the vet and i am not sure yet if she 'll have to have surgery yet or what? but i'am pretty bummed out right now hoping she will still be able to hunt and not be crippled... I damn near thought i was going to have to shoot a year old dog that has more potential than i have ever seen. Keep your fingers crossed for me guys
i'm sure it was my fault for running em there but i have brought them there before, live n learn i guess...

i have to say that she has a good chanice to be able to hunt again. i had a friend that had 1 of his dog and 2 of his dad dogs run of a cliff after a bear. they ended up hitting a river bottom. they feel about 50 or 60 feet. they got back 2 of the dog and one died on the way out. one dog they couldnt find so he cut open the bear and mad it so meat was showing and wanted out with the rest of the dogs. he ended up findind the dog 2 weeks later and she walked out on her own because they couldnt find her on the river bottom with all of the bluffs. so she has a good chance i would think. good luck

Thanks for Sharin'... I guess it could happen easier than one would think.

I turned loose one time to clean the dogs out, put them on the box, ran a bear for part of the day and two of the dogs got sick... real sick. I took them to the vet and the vet said they had salmon poisoning. I said that was impossible because there were no fish bearing streams in the area and the two dogs that got sick were too busy running for that to happen. Sure enough the tests said salmon poison. The only thing that could have happened was they got into some ones spoils at the spot where I stopped to clean them out.

Some people just got the bad luck.
Good luck, I hope your dog is ok.

hurt dog

Post by houndcrazyfool »

yah, i got hooked up pretty good at the vet the bill was about 2k less than what i expected. But looking back now i almost wish i would have put her down. The hip wouldnt stay in place so they cut the head of teh femoral bone off. Now shes laid up pretty bad, just moanin and groanin and sleepin alot. I know she has so much drive to hunt i could never take that out of her but she will never be what she couldve been...

Glad to hear that your dog will be ok. You had mentioned that you got a 2k dollar discount, so I was wondering how much the vet bill was. Did you have any kind of insurance to help with the cost?

dogs vet bill

Post by houndcrazyfool »

It wasnt a discount... just a hook up from a girl i know. She works at the local vet so i didnt get raped like usual! I think they felt sorry for me... But it was a little over 500 bucks. I was told from others to expect 2500-3500...

That's not to bad of a price. I had a female fall from about 8 feet last weekend on some slippery boulders and when I saw your post I got to thinking about how much it would of cost me if what had happened to your dog happened to her. I've been thinking of going to vet school, just to save money on the bills! What is her prognosis as far as her mobility and such?

Merry Christmas and happy hunting.

dog

Post by houndcrazyfool »

Good idea, you will make a fortune on here as a vet! haha

The vet said she will be light footed on that leg with no femoral bone. She said she'll still be able to run and jump so hunting shouldnt be a problem. The dog is very athletic. Lightning fast and climbs at times or use to.... I dont think she will be climbing now
