About lost one - Pictures -

I just about lost a dog the other day due to climbing.
I have never had a problem with climbing in my dogs to bad until I got this little walker female and she climbs like a cat. She got my big dog in a lion tree up high this past week and he fell out and landed on a log with a broken off limb that jabbed up inside of him. About lost my best dog. He hasn't walked for 3 days. Looks like he broke a few ribs but it was up high in his chest where it could have been a lot worse. Any ideas on breaking a hard headed dog of climbing trees? I'm at my wits end. I've tried correcting her with a little electricity, tried the old hard hand and and tried just tying her up. I thought over time a combination of these would curd that behavior but it hasn't. Part of the problem I think is that she can climb so good. Just last week I walked in to a bobcat tree and she is up around 15 feet staring it right in the face. I really don't want to get rid of her cause she is a heck of a dog on bears lions and pretty good on bobers but I can't allow the rest of my pack to pick up on her behavior as they have started to.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

My youngest dog was climbing when he was 8-10months he is 2 years now and has not climbed since 10 months. I caught him climbing strait up a tree with no limbs! Just like you see bears do. He was alredy above my head but I reached up and gave one of his legs a tug and he fell into my arms. I also said, " NO!" ect while doing this and it scared him so much he don't climb no more.

Now that I said he don't climb no more bet next time he is way up in the branches again... Good luck with yours

I've read that removing their dew claws can help curb the problem or atleast make it a little more difficult. Maybe you could set her up by getting her to climb a tree, not while hunting, and then really discipline her harshly and see if that helps.

Good luck BGH, but I doubt there is anything you'll ever do to break a dog from climbing. My eleven year old Rowen bitch has always climbed on bear and lion if she can get a hook or toenail into the wood. And lots of times her brother Ryan would go up behind her. I got to where I'll call her down and she'd jump out to me, but would be back up in the next lion tree. She got left home alot because of that fault..........

All I can say is enjoy that dog and don't hold your breath. I figured that I'd find that little bitch of mine dead under the tree one day and she's now 11 years old, go figure!

I am not sure what you can do about it other then keep telling her no and shock her at the same time. the problem is when the hounds are treeing mine don't seem to feel it. On my sons big tom the other day the cat treed in a leaning tree no more then 12 feet off the ground. If any situation will get hounds climbing, a low leaning tree will do it. Even my pup who was on his first hunt climbed to within 8 feet of that old tom cougar.

That tree climbing is a real bad problem and I"m not sure how to correct it. My lead dog is a tree climber and has taken some bad falls . Last Saturday I got to the tree and he had fallen but his back leg got caught between two limbs and jerked it out of socket. He was just hanging there upside down still treeing .The vet put it back in and put a sling on him for a few days. I"m sure that climbing can be corrected, and would be well worth the effort. Climbers just don"t normally live as long. Even though this dog is 8 yrs old I am gonna really try to set him up and break him from climbing .

Well thanks for the responses. My lead dog is doing a little bit better and my other dogs should benefit a bit not having him to rely on. I'm thinking mabye another 2 weeks and he should be ready to go.

I guess I'll deal with it and keep trying to break her of tree climbing.

I have had several tree climbers.Never came up with a good soloution to break them.
Had two good dogs , die from the injuries though.
One was a male plott and he fell out high on a bear tree and broke his back ,and had to be put down.
The other dog was a big red english redtick male ,he climbed a couple leaning widow makers and slipped ,before i got there and hung hiself between the two ,by the neck ,his collars were holding him there and choked him to death.
Tried cpr but could not save him.
So i guess you could say they broke themselves,tha hard way!
Really tears a guy up ,always the good ones.

I doubt there is anything you'll ever do to break a dog from climbing.

after haveing a bad climber almost killed and a buddys that was- i do what i can to discourage climbing-


seems like pup first starts treeing--- can have some influence--

i snap a leash on them----yank them down hard ,when they start to climb - praise em up - make sure i get em back to treeing-- but yank em again if they try to climb -

repeat repeat repeat- cant say for sure if it works--but ill keep doing it--- havent had a bad climber in years --- we dont have that many trees that are easy to climb - i wont say it works but i belive it helps -


i had a dog once--- bear on first big limb , big elm out in middle of huge over your head blackberry briars--
old grown up cow pasture-

watched her grab bear and both of em fell out -- that was sorta excitin --it wasnt high , nobody hurt except me from briars

that was only time i ever thought it was funny ---
