Whare has all the work gone?

Post by whoflungdung »

Is anybody else struggling to find a job? I am in Rifle, Colorado and have been looking for work since the first Monday of the new year. I cant turn up anything. I cant believe this crap. I have never been fired or laid off ever. I have always moved up in the company's I have worked for. I have always found work with minimal effort. My buddy and I have made 500 plus calls to every state and haven't turned up anything. I have called coal mines, a couple hundred pipeline company's, and a bunch of construction company's with no luck. I have been sitting around calling all the hot sheet numbers but everybody is waiting to see whats going to happen I guess.

I was laid off in mid-November and found a ranch job to help pay the bills(not all of them). As you mentioned, I have always moved up in companies, not out the door. I know of several that are out of work and can not find anything. I also know several contractors that are either really slow or completely out of work. I guess that everyone is in a "holding pattern".

I guess on the upside - we have more time to work with the dogs.

I had to make a parts run up to an equipment dealer in Salt Lake a couple days ago. Their yard was packed with unsold, unrented, and reposessed construction equipment. The salesman said he hasn't seen anything like this in his 18 years of working there.

A couple of years ago there was seldom a day went by that I didn't get a phone call from someone that had some work that needed done. Those phone calls have stopped. Now, there is seldom a day goes by that I'm not asked by someone looking for a job.

How times have changed.

it will take a little time to get your certificate, but welders are one thing thats in high demand. i heard that in america, the top three job demands are for mechinists, diesel techs, and welders. they are begging for diesel techs everywhere up here.

in our welding class, we have already had two different employers come into our class to promote their business. a couple kids in my class are already certified with the boiler makers union in montana, they are doin some work in colstrip montana, and putting up a power plant in great falls montana this summer. from the info i got, seems its a three month gig, and you will walk out with bout $30,0000. but you are workin 7-10's or 7-12's. ive worked that schedule before, and i wont do it to myslef or my dogs again. i can find another welding job makin decent money, and not bustin my ass seven days a week. jsut isnt worth it to me.

i go to school at MSU-Billings. started school in sept. 2008. i will graduate with my welding certificate in may of 2009. as for right now, im dishwareshing at a local mexican resturaunt. talk about a dream job

This is why I have been pouring out my blood, sweat, and tears for years starting my own businesess. I'm telling you guys, there is nothing better than owningyour own business....DESPITE the economy. If you're interested read THE FOUR HOUR WORKWEEK by Timothy Ferris. Good place to start...especially if you're laid off.

Yea my friend Corey and I have been working our butts off to get our Guide licenses but it always seems like something happens or something comes up. Right now we are getting out pack together which Utah is the only running dogs as I have a 6 month old pup and he has another female Cameron on the way. I have dreamed of Guiding people since I was a kid.

wyoming knows whats going on. we have about ten times the coal reserve in montana than wyoming, yet they still out produce us every year. they take complete advantage of their natural resoursces, mainly in mining and drilling for oil. if they had trees they would probably logg them to  thats why they have alot of high paying jobs,

there is a place in gillette, wy called l&h industrial, and a place in capser wyoming called west tech, both manufacture massive mining equipement (mining shovels, drag liners ect.) i know L&H is hiring welders now, not sure about west tech.
here are some links if your interested

WEST TECH-Capser, WY

L&H INDUSTRIAL-Gillette, WY- Rock Springs, WY-Pheonix, AR- Sheridan, WY

hope these can help a little
