Pete, love to read your posts! Folks like Nelson Cole don't make a living off of dogs unless they are producing! Clients pay upto 2000.00$ to hunt with guides like Nelson and they would not be happy if they where not getting up close and personal with the bear!!!!
My very limited expeirence with bear hunting was by mistake........out coon hunting. I had a half walker/mtn cur I got in Florida and my uncle had 3/4 walker 1/4 redbone. My dog hunted 5 times in Wv. and treed 3 times on 2 bear. Now I can't prove it.......but I truely believe that if we had bear hunted on purpose........we wouldn't had many empty days! That dog of my uncles had treed about 10. They actually culled a coon track for the bear. I know this cause our other 2 dogs treed a coon about 300 yards from where they struck the bear. That dog of my uncles was about 98% accurate on coon. To cull a coon track, makes me think, we could have made a rug or two!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: best breed for bear
See the diference here Larry, is you would own a growly dog. There won't be a growly dog in my yard no matter what color.
I've gone hunting with friends and family and had an upwards of 8-18 dogs on a single tree. ALL Walkers. Get there and not a single issue. Don't even have to tie them back until your ready to go. Not even a wry look over a dead bear.
Mine stay out of trouble, unless they are climbing the tree, they will be sitting back treeing.
But hey, some people can tolorate that sort of thing. The meanest dogs I've ever seen we're mixed up dogs, at least half of them were half Plott, Bluetick, or Walker.

Cassandra, I bet you're hot when you're angry
Thats some funny chit right there. HAHA!
Why do folks feel the need to run more than 3 or 4 dogs on bear? I still do not understand this at all. How do you evaluate and breed and cull when you got so many dogs out there that there is no way in hell you can tell whats goin on?

Re: best breed for bear
what bothers me about all this is the fact that so many good dogs are trashed on just because of there color. ill be the first to admit i aint as good at training and running dogs as most of yall and my dogs aint the best but they can get the job done and i run a mixed pack, walkers plotts redbones and some cross breeds and could care less about color. if its a good dog its a good dog and ill find room in my pack for it regardless of breed. hell ill run a stock dog or bird dog if it will put game up a tree. we all have are own opinions and what works for each of us but come on give the good ones the credit they deserve no matter what they are. and i agree with dan four or five dogs is plenty and if they dont do the job they will be replaced. ive had more problems trying to run eight to ten dogs than it was worth so i cut back. no need to bash each other or treat each other like sh#t just cause we run different dogs. the best dog i ever had was a walker plott cross and id run him over any pure bred dog ive ever hunted with. im sure there is better out there but he did everything i ever wanted and always was at the tree with game in it. good luck to yall and hunt em hard. thats what makes a dog.
coal burning stove, no natural gas if that aint country ill kiss yer a$$

Re: best breed for bear
I caught bear all year with 2 dogs.
But when you get together once or twice a year and have a friend/family hunt, if you have 6 or 7 people with 3-4 dogs, that adds up pretty fast. It's a big cluster**** but it can be fun if it's a once in a while thing.
But hey, I'm not affraid to run my dogs with other people. I don't sit back and pretend have the best dogs ever, and have never even have ran them against anyones.

Re: best breed for bear
lots of garbage dogs in all breeds..
nitwit bear hunters too. i think this thread shows that
.
if u can condemn a whole breed.. then your a nitwit
if u will allow yourself to stubbornly argue about it i'd say your an even bigger nitwit
which ones best?
its been said before theres more difference within each breed then there is within all tree hounds.. i agree more or less
how many have seen people condemn a breed after seeing only a handful of them? im not saying that to be the case here but maybe something like that
seeing a powerhouse in another breed will make u scratch ur head.. i guarentee ya theres an off colored dog in someones box somewhere thats better than whats in yours
hunt what u like.. breed for the best.. ur all wasting ur time arguing
