Irish Wolfhounds were bred for this centuries ago, but the wolves have all been erradicated in Ireland so they have not been used for what they were bred for in a long long time. They however are big and fast enough. I do not know how you would even train one. Good luck with your quest. :)

the original Irish wolfhound was a heavy running dog more like the MODERN AMERICAN great dane. the current breed was created from dane, scottish deerhound & some large irish mutts by a british army captain named graham in the 1800s.
there are plenty of dogs that can fight & beat a wolf 1 on 1 in a controlled environment. it is a breed test for several asian livestock guarding breeds. the only hunting breed that might fill the bill are good argentine bred dogos & some of the aussie crossbred hogdogs (they like them big). you would also have to be prepared to lose a lot of them in the process. building an essentially wolf proof pack could probably be done but it would take a lot of time, effort & MONEY.

Here in Finland boys have been using walkers or russian hounds. Both are large hounds, but do not match wolf with 1 on 1. Our hunting tactic is to make wolf know that there are also humans in the forest tracking him. When wolf escape human scent it don't like to fight that much with dogs. So hunter will not unleash his hounds before he has jumped the wolf by himself.
There is also hundrets of men surrounding that area where those wolfs are jumped(With shotguns of course). We don't get that much kill tags so everyone that can will come to hunt when we get one. Wolves are deebly hated around hunters because those f...ers kill a lot of moose dogs and hound during hunting season.

On average, it takes about two 70 pound stags to kill a 35 pound coyote.

The wolves that the Irish Wolfhound and the Russian Wolfhounds hunted were not as big as our wolves, not ever close actually. It took approx. 4 of these dogs to catch and "HOLD" a wolf for the rider to come in and kill it with a club, spear, or some type of firearm. These "wolfhound" were about 85 to 105 pounds. Anything bigger than that and you cant catch anything but a headache watching them run cause they are slower than molasses in January. Also, try and get these fighting dogs to run with your pack of hounds for any serious amount of time, good luck. I know a guy that is breeding dogs to maybe some day attempt to course a single lone wolf in the wide wide open. He does not plan on turning loose anything under 6 or 8 dogs. He is probably gonna loose whichever of these 6 or 8 dogs actually have the balls to tackle the big bastard and the others are gonna run back to the truck with holes punched in their ass end.

Pops said it best, "CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT". Anything other than that, you are pissin in the wind folks.

I heard a story from a pretty reliable source that this spring they bayed up a wolf, it was a single. I didn't see it with my own eyes so take it as you will.. I think that it would be a interesting challenge to a great pack of plotts..lol I do think 4 or 5 dogs could bay a single up, I just don't know how you would know that 6-8 of his buddies weren't around to have his back, which would turn the tables in a bad way! Plus having to explain to the law would be no fun!!!

Here is a link for a pic of wolf pack what they have been using.

There are some other wolf hunting pictures as well. The metod of using flag line to surround the area where wolf lay on daytime is also shown on this pictures.

The line can be several miles long and it smells like shit, gasoline or anything with human scent on it so the wolfs don't dare to cross it.

As long as it was an immature wolf, I can believe it. A full grown male could snap the front leg off a dog with one snap. They could rip the back bone and ribcage completely out also if they so desire. Just look in the areas where folks have trapped them. The alder bushes around will be snapped clean off from the frustrated wolf. Just cause a Plott or any other breed has the desire, grit, you name it to "bay" up a bear or hog or whatever does not mean they are gonna fight another canine that can kill them with ease.

I know for a fact last winter I seen a wolf standing in the road, when i was cat hunting. He jumped off the road when we drove up to where he was the box exploded like a bear strike. I know my box of culls would of ran him, there were tracks of three others that we didn't see. I wasn't going to find out if they could bay him up or not. Haven't lost a dog yet but i'm fully expecting my time will come..

A coyote will act alot different when they know there are humans and trucks around. Let em get out there at night though and away from people and turn into a few of them barking with three of your dogs and find out just how rough they can be, all 35 pounds of them. Now try that shit with a 100 plus pound wolf. Its gonna hurt your feelings in a bad way.

Mine rig like hell on them too (even after a few educations). Makes me not want to turn loose on a rig unless I see the bear track.

I know what you mean about double checking for bear tracks. The Chilcotin is real wolf country, with so few people here you can't hurt the population so everyday your out you have to dodge wolves. My hounds seem to cower when they smell fresh wolf piss and that was before the wolves killed my walker and put a hole in my black and tan. In this country packs of up to 21 have been documented but 6 to ten are more common.

we lost one male plott 40lbs last august in wi to wolves and it is not a pretty site. However we did bay one up in sept. One dog and one wolf. I think the wolf was sick or something as it layed right down and didn't attempt to fight or anything. This is not the first one that we have bayed up.
