Re: best breed for bear
This thread is crazy. The best dog is diffenently the color of my boot leather. If you dont run those (dogs) then don't exspect much back in brown, white, black, blue, red,or tan!!

I guess that many people think it does not matter and there are a hand full that think it does matter and to be honest your both right . There are super dogs in every breed or color but your kidding yourself if you think that breeds ( as a whole ) do not show stronger tendencies toward certain traits than other breeds.

Curby I agree with you especialy about strains ( lines ect...) but even within those strains and lines of respective breeds you will find either higher or lower percentages of "the " certain traits you might be looking for in each succive breeds and lines.
As the saying goes a top dog is where you find em and they can come from anywhere but you definately can increase you odds of having consistancy in your endeavours if you do your homework and I might add have a lot of luck.

Sounds like most of these guys are a bunch of color blind, in it for the bear half hearted bearhunters not houndsmen. And there is a grave difference in the two. A good hound comes from breeding the best to the best and settling for nothing less. I dont have the perfect bear dog i dont think but I do have as good a pack as the next guy. Some good rig dogs some good bay dogs some good trail dogs plenty of fast dogs and some dogs that can do it all. Thats what makes the best bear dog. A good pack. I have never baught a dog but raised and bred them my whole life from Van Johnsons old blutick and walker breeding crossed with the Spring creek rock stuff that made its way into our pack. Good dogs can come from anywhere but why would you ever not hunt a hound thats not a Plott or a redbone or a Walker. I wont talk up my pack all of my talkin will be done when we count dogs under a tree or at the end of a 12 hour walkin and fightin bear.

JustJared I was wondering where you got you Plott/Cameron cross? I know a guy in ID that crosses like that. Was curious if you got him from him? I have a cameron female I am thinking of breeding to his male and am curious about his pups.

Re: best breed for bear
Best breed for Bear, well in my opinion it depends on where you are hunting. We have a ranch where we run bears 5 months out of the year, I have seen every type, breed make and model of dog here, and the heinz 57 English/Walker/Plott X is the only way to go, they are raw boned, small, thin skinned hounds, that can take the heat and rough terrain. I have seen tons of guys roll up with a box full of good bear dogs that don't make it half way through the race. You go south 50 miles and the same dogs smoke bears all day everyday, and so do the RED EWPX. My point being it all depends on what you are doing and where you are hunting. I like all breeds, but the top 2 breeds in the poll crossed up with some English and you got a Bear dog. But that is me, and what do I know.
