Wolves have taken over

Post by jasonrinebold »

I can't believe how far they have come in towards the towns now. Areas that used to be somewhat safe no longer are. Moscow Id is hippie bunny hugger central and they wolves are coming within 3 to 4 miles of town through open wheat feilds. Theres no more elk theres alot less deer and keeping cat dogs is almost a joke for the guys who don't chase bobcats. I've logged about 18 days of hard hunting in trucks snowmachines qnd hikeing to catch 2 lions in idaho so far this year. I hate to say I hope they start eating people soon cause Obama's gonna protect them again. The fedral govermant should be ashamed as well as the idaho department of fish and game I hope they go broke. I think an out of state hunter should know our elk herd is an alltime low and there isn't 5% of the elk here that were here in the 80's and probably 75% less than was here jsut 5 years ago. It's wolves 3 bad winters and overhunting in most units. But even the old trophy units are a waste of time anymore. Save your money and go somewhere else for success.

It sounds like a guy that had a breed of dogs that would run down and kill a wolf could make some money these days selling pups............wish it were me!

If wolves attacked people they would blame it on the victims, parents should let kids out in the park if they knew that there were dangerous animals around or maybe that lady should not have "cycled" and went for a run. These ar people will blame it on us.

They just found a pack in Washington by where we hunt. They collared two adults and had pictures of five pups. They are still just hanging out in a couple of draniages so we can still hunt just have to be carfull. It sounds like alot of you have to deal with them and have been for some time. Does anyboby have an idea how long it takes before they really start multiplying and expanding their area? This is the first time I ever had to deal with them and I'm not liking it much. We even let a couple of lion tracks go because it was heading towards the wolves and we couldn't seperate it from the area where the wolves were. I like my dogs to much to have one killed by a wolf for one cat. How do you hunt around the wolves?

You have three options don't hunt near the wolves while there is still a place without wolves. Two, sell out and take up golf or tennis. Three, Keep hunting, be careful and try to see if there's wolves in the area before turning loose but have a couple litters of pups going because sooner or later you are going to lose some dogs..

Wish it were all that easy. I spent 3 days last week trying to find country not covered with with tracks. It's a coin flip even if ther arn't tracks what's in the next drainage if your dogs end up there. It's that much harder during bear season, longer races, and no snow to help checking an area out.

I just flat don't turn loose in an area with wolf sign. The spot we used to cat hunt in is over-run, and I mean over-RUN. They follow the lions, and if it wasn't for giving them the slip in the rocks now and then, they would starve the cats right out. An outfitter went in there last wek and took a nice tom lion though, my partner ran into him on the road. He was asked if he saw any wolf sign, 'my partner already knowing the answer' and the outfitter said there were 22 wolf tracks with that lion inbetween them! He puts dollars over his dogs I guess....I don't.

Like piglet stated, I have semi-retired some dogs until we get more pups, it's not a matter of if, but when. We keep a close eye on the mud puddles for tracks during bear season, but I know I could get wiped out in a single day.

As far as how fast they multiply? It's not good news, because for everyone you see signs of, or they count, there is four or five they no nothing about. At one time we were told by a BIOLOGIST there was only 2 wolves in one entire area. The morning before in fresh snow, the three of us traveling in different directions counted the tracks of 33. What's funny is it's so thick there you couldn't count them by plane, and we were the only ones that made tire tracks in those drainages ALL SEASON LONG, but yet the biologists tell us how many there are? Sorry to ramble,.... we're all on our own.

I dread the day that we start seeing Wolves on a regular basis here. We had them a hundred years ago but they were all shot with the bounty then they replaced them with coyotes in the 60's now we cant kill enough of those. It was nice when it was legal to snare them but the politicians took that away from us and we can only trap till dec 31st but can put the lead to em any time. Id just say oops, thought it was a big Coyote.

Jason you noticed i was talking about washington, in idaho good luck trying to find a place, i know, you might be safe to hunt the lewiston grade up to genesee.lol Last fall a wolf was run over just west of spokane, and right now the warden in davenport is getting pixs and reports of a small pack between davenport and wilbur. I have not seen inclusive proof yet but there is usually some truth to rumors. The wdfw has not confirmed that a pack has established territory in northern stevens county, but thats because the wdfw has not drafted a plan and they don't know what to do other than say don't shoot one. They weren't prepared for how fast they multiply, and the biologist think they know wolves, but like all animals they adapt and change habits so your guess is as good as theirs.
