three hounds with loss of balance

Post by bearhunter77 »

Yesterday I cleaned up the kennel and put new sawdust over the top. That evening I went out and fed the dogs. This morning I went to play with the pups and three of my hounds are barely walking. Their hind legs act like they're giving out especially my cur dog. I took the two pups out that were acting this way and one of them actually seemed like she was doing much better after about a mile. The other was just walking in a non playful manner. Right when I took them back to the kennel the pup that showed no progression tried going down the canal bank but didn't have the energy to get back up. Al my cur dog is even worse. I tried taking him out and he wouldn't even go. None of them have been biten by a coon or anything for that matter. I've been feeding the same dog food. I notice the sawdust I put down this time was mostly walnut. Could they be having an alergic reaction? I have one pup in the kennel that's acting just fine with the other three. Could they be reacting to a bad batch of black gold? I know this has nothing to do with it but the three that are affected all have some Jeff Allen breeding in them.

I found something about horses and mules and black walnut allergies. IT said Black Walnut was highly toxic. I've never gotten a bad bag of B.G., I suppose it is possible, but you would think if it were that that you would notice a change in their crap. Change the bedding and/or take them to the vet. Could they have gotten into any poison?

GET RID OF THAT WALNUT BEDDING ASAP or sooner....... I lost most of a litter from it. the pups got puss pockets around their noses... and died..
It will kill horses that crib a gate.

I scraped everyinch of walnut bedding I could from the dog houses and floor. I've been looking at sights describing the affects of black walnut shavings and dogs. I hope I have the problem taken care of. The fourth dog in the kennel has also started acting this way.

It might take 2-3 days for the dogs to improve.... that happened back in 93 for me.. we did save 2 from the litter after a bunch of penecillin shots and getting them on wheat straw.. one was the Sally female I let Larry Morgan have after she was 3..

sure hope they improve. and I hope this saves someone in the future some pain.

I would say its the walnut. I do a lot of wood carving, and if you dont wear a good mask carving or sanding walnut, it will really screw you up for a while.

If you think it is an allergic reaction I would give one or two of them Benadryl and see if that helps.
