Anyone hunt coon in the day time?

Post by livetohunt »

I have heard lots about hunting coon during the day time. I was just wanting to know more about this? I have two little kids and would love to let them see the dogs work. Just wanting to know if this could be right for me?

Yep, we do sometimes. If you have any big brier patches that will be your best bet to catch one during the day, not to easy for the lil ones though.

I just got back in this morning after catchin one coon on the ground. Caught him at 10:00. It seems a little wrong to be hunting coons in Feb. in Montana, but it won't snow so the cat hunting isn't worth a boo, and it keeps the dogs in shape and me out of trouble.

I hunt coon all the time in the day but with Terriers & Lurchers not hounds.. I always find them in the Briers... The places I hunt are small and close to town so the hounds dont work well but the terriers get something every time..

I have caught a few in the day time. Seems they usually den up, which doesn't bother me any I have a jagd patterdale cross that goes in after them. My nephew and his friends have pups from her that I crossed with a fox terrier and they are hunting them on coon during the day and doing well. I think if you are going to hunt during the day you better get a terrier for the dens.

i have been hunting nights and have seen many tracks but only got one coon nut been doin better during the day when just exercising dogs stumbled acrossed the day thing that way but glad it was day big boar coon in a deep creek jumpin on heads wasn't cool bought drowned my dogs my plott would get the coon on his back and try to swim for shore and the coon would jump off everytime got close to the bank so i was chest deep in water caught it by the tail and heaved it up on the bank after dogs where pissed wasn't even much fur left to skin the coon looked like it went through a grinder tail ripped off fur everywhere
its better to tree and let live then tree and kill to never be ran again

I hunt almost exclusively in daylight. I like to leave the house in darkness and get my hunting ground around first light. I prefer hunting at this time for several reasons. One, I can watch my hounds work and have a greater chance of starting a bobcat. Two, I like the idea of my dogs striking an older track and having to work for it. If you hunt in darkness only, chances are your dogs will never have to learn to trail as they will just hunt until they find a hot track. I will catch 200-300 coons and 5-10 bobcats annually hunting in this fashion.
Adios,

Around here the bigger boar coons seem to move the best from 2 a.m. til sunup.I usually head out at around 5 a.m. and have hunted this way with pretty good results for the last 3 coon seasons.i prefer hunting in the daylight cuz i can't see for s*it in the dark.
