hog dogs on bear

Post by JJB »

Im new to bear hunting, I have been hog hunting for 15 years. I am from central west Texas. For the last 3 years I have taken my hog dogs to NM. to run bears. I dont have any trouble getting my dogs to run a bear they just wont tree, I can hear them fighting on the ground, but when the bear trees the seem to loose interest if they cant fight with it. My hounds wont even tree. They see over 100 hogs a year and have never seen one go up a tree. Any pointers??

Brinkdog, I run Blueticks, plott crosses, and very open catahoula's. All my dogs are fairly gritty and will pull hair. They have put 4 bears up trees that I know of and probably ran another

Maybe do it the same as young coon dogs. Shoot one out and let the dogs that tree it have it and leave them tied back.

If ya know someone with a tree dog invite them to go along and I bet after a couple times of watching the dog tree on bear at least some of them will get the hang of it. Tie those dogs back away from the tree and let them see the bear come down and turn em loose and tree again, maybe thet will fire them up a little. Good luck. Mike
