One eyed dog

Post by yotahounder »

How many hunters out there are running a one eyed dog, or partially blind dog. & if so, what are you running them on? I got a pup that just got her eye mangled by a cat & lost sight in that eye & was curious as you everyone else out there...

Dogs are most adaptable and they will learn to compensate quickly for this handicap. Too bad so many people can't do the same.

Anyway I have seen dogs with one bum lamp turn in great performances on lion , bear and coon. Just don't slip up on that blinds side while he is eating or he may take a bite out of you. LOL!

I had a moon eyed dog one time out of Dale Lee's Joe dog. He had them light eyes and I just thought it was blue eye sydrome but later found out it had to do with infection in the womb. Anyway old Baldy was pretty and he had a big old square head on him and a big old horn bawl mouth. He could get around pretty good during the daylight but at night he would fall of in holes and such. The vet said he just sort of had shadow sight. Anyway he made a wonderful pet for a ranch family, but I think if I would have hunted him much in the bluffs he would have just walked off one of them . Too bad never really knew what caused that.

YOTAHOUNDER a friend had a one eyed plott, a top notch bear hound to say the least. A couple of years ago one of my lead dogs ran a stick or something in his eye the first day of fall bear, he would not leave it alone. We left bear camp and headed for the vet, the vet sewed it shut and he treed a bear the next day. He ran that way for three weeks acting no different on caught bears. We pulled the stitches and the eye went cloudy but has partial vision, so far he has never looked back. hope all your tracks end at the tree BIG TRACK

The guy that got me started in this mess had a one eyed dog. His name was slew foot and that dog caught alot of game (bear, bobcat, lion and coon that is when we could still hunt), I think that he was about 5 or 6 when he lost his eye. I don't even remember how he lost it, the story always changed depending on who was around. I personaly think that hounds are one of the toughest animals there is and if they are a hunter they will catch game one eye or not. I say keep hunting it.

I just had my one eyed dog that just die of old age, it never slowed him down a bit, I did make sure and start him on the right side of the starting line in the field trials because it was the right eye that was gone and I noticed that in the treeing contests he would center his left eye on the tree to see it better. He lost eye after getting slapped in the head by a pissed off sow with cub , he went blind in it then eye swelled up and I had it removed the vet placed a plastic eye in the hole and stiched it up.

One of the traits of the blood hound is the loos skin on the face to cover the eyes of the dog so the dog can concentrate on the sent!
