Gathering Of Texas Houndsmen
Just returned from Dilley, TX where we made a cat hunt on Fri. nite and attended a gathering of hound dog men on Sat. I tried to get Phil Lyne and Shorty to meet me but seems Shorty was in Ohama and Phil never showed up.
14 of us showed up on the ranch at Dilley and dumped 15 potlickers before the sun went down. We were afraid that we might be wasting our time as the wind was blowing and it was drier than a popcorn fart. The dogs did not trot a quarter of a mile before hitting a smoking hot track and after a ten to 15 minute race had the cat in a mesquite tree on the edge of a sendero. We drove up to the tree and took a group photo with the dogs and cat in the tree behind us.
We went down the road another mile and the hounds struck again. This time it was not as hot and the dogs struggled a bit before treeing the cat four times. Richard Hurt went back to his house on the ranch about 10:15. The remainder stayed until 1:30 am and caught two more kittys. Not a bad evening 4 bobcats in approx. 5 hours. All of the hounds were running dogs, a couple had a little blue in them.
Went into Dilley on Sat. around 9:00 am and saw some friends that I have not seen in many years. Met Luis Chapa, lion hunter from south of the border. He had a photo of 4 lions that he caught in one day this past year.
James Land was there with a photo of a group of hunters and 82 wild hogs they killed on a ranch near Pearsall in one day! That is a lot of pork. Had a great time and plan to attend again next year.
Adios,
Gary

Hey Gary. Me and Wade were out at your family's place Saturday night. Caught one coon on the ground and killed a big rattlesnake. About four and a half feet long. Ya'll sure need some rain out there.About as dry as I've seen.

Sounds like a whale of a good time Gary.
I feel so sorry for Shorty he is having to run all over the country and dancing with the stars. But he is still good eneogh to give me a call after all that while I am trotting down the rimrock just me and them old dogs, and ya know I really do beleive he would have rather have been up there in that high clear air where we could see four states than where he was. He is one good guy, and a good freind.
As far as his Daddy in Law Phil goes , well I might blush if I ever saw him out there hunting he was sort of a hero of mine back when I thought I could cowboy a bit.Sort of like stepping up on the tee box and looking over and seeing Tiger Woods. Now what are you going to do with that stick? LOL!

Will be back down there again this weekend trying to call a few coyotes to the camera. A good soaking would help the trailing conditions. Are you hunting cats?
Terry
Did the coon you caught on the ground run pretty good? What sort of speed does Wade's big male dog have?
Mike
You are sure right, those boys are good folks. It always amazes me how many bobcats there are down in that Brush Country. We can hit more tracks in one day than I can in a year up here in the Hill Country. Bobcat numbers appear to be on the rise and if all of the deer hunters would quit shooting them for a few years, I would have some good hunting. They just can't stand to let one walk by. Of course killing the cats makes some of the ranchers that are trying to hang on to the sheep and goat deal real happy.

Yes I'm hunting cats. There are plenty of cats here but nowhere near the numbers that are in south TX. They also run harder here and I'm in rougher country so I like to hunt down there a little.

The dogs treed the coon pretty quick. Before we got to the tree the coon bailed out of the tree. The dogs ran him a short distance and killed him pretty quick. Wade's male has got good speed. He's making a pretty good hound.

I am an hour west of Ft. Worth, in the big city of Lone Camp. 70% chance of rain tonight and we need it.

Gary,
I sure wish I hadn't let you down. I'd have loved to have joined ya'll at the gathering. Ijust can't pass up on that money you know. Glad you had fun and got to see some old friends. Maybe I can join you next year. If your down this way you ought to come call some coyotes at the house. Phil doesn't allow anyone to use a call here. I believe he's saving it for you and Larry. We lost alot of fawns this year, even more than Phil knows about. I've found alot of them while cat hunting, all coyote kills. Come see us sometime soon.
Mike,
Your dang sure right that I'd rather have been out there with you than where I was. I don't like to do my hunting from a computer but at times thats all I've got. If I could afford it thats all I'd do is hunt. My friends would get tired of seeing me pull into the drive for yet another hunt. As for now I'll just have to love out of a hotel for half the week while my friends are out making circles. Although while my friends are at work guess who's making circles. Ya'll take care and happy hunting. We need to get together soon and go cause some trouble.

Talked with Phil yesterday. Said that you'll are working on the coyotes there behind the house and if they are killing fawns, need to get after them. I may supposed to be in Pearsall on Sat. for a predator calling contest. Richard Hurt and I are going to try to call a few dogs and shoot a little video. Tell Amanda and the kids "Hey". By the way, tell Amanda that we have an new red weiner dog, another female.

Will do Gary. Hopefully one day I'll be in town when your down this way. I've dot some coil springs set for those little boogers. Can't set them on the whole ranch though. Gotta leave somewhere to trot the dogs.

Shorty come on anytime we like seeing that Duromax pull into the yard, and Chase said he would be happy to sleep on the couch when you come. LOL!
Gonna take part of next week off and do a little camp hunting in some country that is a pretty good ways out. Buddy coming in from Idah and we will take some horses and dogs and cowboy tee-pee and just ride the rimrock and hope for the best. Wish you could join us it will be some awesome country with great scenery.
See you on the tube however and you keep ducking the horns and you leave that dancing to Ty. LOL!
