You have a good way of looking at it Pat theres always next year But the way the work situation is around here i was hoping for this year because if i cant work i can stay out all season and hunt and theres always pursuit and take one of them fancy pictures then I can figure out how to post em on here

Don't feel left out guys cause I drew a unsuccessful again this year as well.......if it wasn't for pursuit season on bear a guy might as well get rid of or thin down those hounds.....

Well, I knew I shouldn't have made that post cause somebody would call me out on how many or whatever. I've been a little luckier than some and have drawn two state tags and made one hunt on the reservation after only eighteen years of efforts........so, maybe I better shut up!

Better luck to you guys next year.......

No i was just wondering because i hear some guys saying they have 10 points or 13 points and last years stats says max ponts to draw was 9 so i was being curios thats all and was more or less trying to figure my odds for next year

There should be an odds stat sheet on the DWR web sight somewhere, but you would have to go did it out. So where are you putting in for Book Cliffs? Places like the Books, Las Sal and San Juan are pretty tough draws and it might take eight to twelve points and a little luck; other units are less.

I put in for the books two different times and built up several points and then switched up for an easier unit for a tag, but I've killed a couple nice boars and so it doesn't matter if I ever get to hunt those units for myself. There are a few good bears on about every unit, and i figure I'd rather have half a dozen tags on lesser units than one on a top unit. Truth is I killed a state record bear on a lesser unit and so that pretty much backs up my reasoning for switching......

Good luck and may the hunting gods and the computer draw gods show favor on you next year..........

No luck here either. If you go to the website hunterstrailhead.com then they make it so you can get an idea for how many points you need on what unit to draw a tag. It is a little easier to read than what the DWR puts out.

On another note, I am not sure about the rest of you but I am about to go bear crazy! This spring like weather is getting me excited! Only a month or so now and we will be leashing up the NIKES and hitting the walking canyons looking for those early risers. Springtime hunting is my favorite when the snow has left and so with it 90% of the hunters, the dirt rises for a track as easy to see as one left in an inch of snow and the walking and riding is heavenly!

Nope...I can't wait!

Thanks for the link on the bear odds BGH........

And I know what you mean about the walking is a bunch more fun in the dirt than in that old, hard crusted snow. I got some dirt under my feet yesterday and today both, and it felt really good. My hounds ended up looking up both times and life is great. I hope you have a really great bear season BGH, and I'm looking forward to it as well.............

Yea Pat, I've been snagging a few lions and the walk into the trees have certainly been more enjoyable with a little dirt under my feet rather than snow. There is just something special about the southern exposure and dry ground that appeals to me over standing in a wet, overcast canyon with clouds overhead. I've just about gotten to where I'd rather stay home until about now and not hunt the winter months, as late fall and early spring tends to suit me more.

I sent four hounds down a dry ground bitch track yesterday and held back three just in case I found a tom track. The track started slow but those four hounds pounded out the track and got treed after six or seven hours. The climb in is always better on a dry southern slope than on a northern one that has a foot or two of snow on it....hate that chit!

So have you been running much?

keep'em treed,
