Locked gates,private landowners and access

Post by Timberhound »

All around our nation these days people have to deal with their hunting country being closed to access because of gates. We have had to deal with this a lot in nw Oregon because of all of the timber companies locking their ground up most of the year and even when it is open some of these corporations look down so much on hound hunters that you will get kicked out immediately if even seen with a hound box in your rig. The worst outfit around my area is Weyerhauser, mostly because the guys in the office down here are so scared shitless to be PC that they bow to the will of the public sentiment, that and the security guard is an ass ex-state game warden. Recently there have been rumors that Sierra-Pacific, a northern California based company is going to buy the tree farm here so I was wondering what kind of acces do they permit. Not only for hound hunters but elk and deer, fishing, etc. Are there any of these bigger timber companies that welcome hunters access but are limited because of the lowlifes that steal, dump trash, vandalize equipment. Who are the best landowners to deal with? I know that Longview Timber corp allows hound guys when their gates are open and are fairly accepting to our sport. I would also like to take this opportunity to let everyone know how much I dislike Weyerhauser and their entire way of thinking, timber managent and corporate structure BS!

Forget about private companies. Here in CO. we have the Forest Service to deal with. Every year we have more and more roads with a new gate accross them. Last week another gate showed up on a road I've checked for years. The FS doesn't want any of us in THIER forest.

Weyerhauser was talking about Selling access and Keys, I think it was for 250 bucks or so.. The only problem was they specifically singled out Hounds, and won't allow it. I don't even care about harvest, It would be nice just to Train and pursuit..

Anyone Else is allowed to Buy thier access... Pretty Crappy Deal.

Well I can tell you if SPI gets the land you will not be any better off than you are now. They own most of the land up my way and they are closing more gates every year. They do leave some of the the gates open for the deer hunters but as soon as deer closes they get shut. I too have seen a lot of Forest Service gates closed this year. It sure make a guy happy to know that its his land his tax dollars pay for it but he can use it. Got to keep it closed off so that the Sierra Club and PETA have a place to go when they want to leave the city..... Makes me sick............

stimpson timber co. had a crap load of land and they never shut the gates where we were at, we even ran cows on their ground durin the summer.

we got what some of you guys are talkin about. the forrest service puttin locked gates accross roads to "protect elk calvin ground" so u dont disturb em. thats what the sign says. bull shit. just another excuse to keep u off the land. why have it be state land if your just going to lock the roads.

Several years back Weyerhaeuser bought a large tract of land in Northern Ga. and they put up signs no trespassing no hunting etc.
they got several phone calls that we have hunted on this land for over 100 years and if we can't hunt we will burn it down, and gave them a date the signs came down.
