Big Game B&Ts in the western US

Post by P.W. Chapman »

What are some of the better known B&T lines used on big game out West?

I am primarily a coon hunter, but do a little hog and bear hunting here in the Blue Ridge mtns. Love a good ol Black and Tan dog....

I have heard of Kenneth Duncan's Black and Tans...and I remember hearing about a top notch line of grade Black and Tans out there somewhere too...Boone somebody, maybe?

What can you guys out that way tell me about some of these ...

Quite a bit of Duncan stuff out here - great dogs, great guy. I have some McDonald/Nightrider dogs also. There are some Trackdowns out here, a little of everything I suppose.

catdogs...the Nightrider stuff you mention intrigues me. Whereabouts did you find some of that old blood. It is a rare find these days. I appreciate your input guys, thanks. Jeff, that is a handsome dog!

I run Black and Tans in N. CA. The are Sooner line out of Utah. Both parents are Sooner. The male was owned by Buddy Crook, a neighbor, and the bitch was my girlfriends. She bought it from someone named Seeno who wanted more of a cat dog or whatever. They work for me and like the breed. Boone is close by also, I know his grandson and could probably put you in contact. Pete Meyer

The best Black&Tan I've ever seen was out of Gene Hick's Albert line out of Tennesee. The guy that owned him lived in Canada and caught a lot of bear, lion, bobcat, and some lynx with him. He had a few females from the same lines that he caught a lot of game with too. I would have fed his Thunder dog any day. I never hunted with his females but he said they were good and he's an honest man.

Thanks for the replies y'all. I am familiar with the Gene Hicks bred dogs, as we are right over the hill so-to-speak from East Tennessee. Our main dog is a grandson of old Two Time Albert. We coon hunt mostly, but bear hunt some on occaision. That Albert grandson I mentioned has treed a couple of bear while coonhunting at night...that is a eye-opener when you get to those trees LOL.

My first and best black and tan was a dog I got from Gene Hicks in the early 70's out of Tenn. Thunder. This dog went back to the Earl Gossett dogs that Gene had as a very young man. Old Gunsmoke was tall, very leggy, 28" ears which late in life were very tattered from the hundreds of coon battles he had. He was very smart, very cold nosed and very fast, and stubborn oh my gosh!

That old dog taught me more about hounds, scent and hunting than any person ever could have.

I also had dogs out of
Gene's Thunder Mountain Mingo possibly the best looking black and tan I have ever seen and later Hick's Tenn. Bandit. Old Gene is black and tan man from the ground up. Most of Ken Duncan's early dogs also came from Gene Hicks I believe.I know his Rooster dog did.

First off let me start with Potlickers are not My cup of Tea, not since I quit Coon hunting when I gaduated from High School in 1974.

Now then, we have a neighbor who moved here from New Mexico last year who has some B&T that are the real deal.

George Hobbs, (send a PM and I will give his cell#) has 5 Big and I mean BIG Black and Tans who he Coon hunts with here and takes back home to run Bear and Lions with.

Myself and two of our Bobcat hunting friends were George's guest in NM a couple of weeks ago. We were not expecting too much as the country was awful dry but Gearge's Hounds were impressive. Their nose, trailing a two day old track (we had been on that Rd two days before and he and not walked, rancher found it that afternoon and we did not get back), their guts; the rocks and Choya really messed up their feet leaving bloody paw prints on the rocks, and they still hunted their hearts out; and their brains sorting out where old Long Tail might have gone when the trail pooped out in a hot dry sandy Arroyo bottom, and then jumping him and putting him in a Bluff. All this after FOUR grueling days in the worst conditions a Houndsman could imagine.

These werent just tough old western big game hounds either. Georges old gyp is a Grand Nite Champion who has place well at the World hunt and Autum Oaks, his main dog is a Dual Grand Champion, and two of his coming three year olds are World Hunt qualified Coon dogs.

If some one was wanting B&T's these Hounds sure get my vote!
