A funny thing happens about every spring if a guy owns a pack of bear hounds, and that is he starts getting the itch to go run a bear. I realize most of us western guys have had lions all winter and spring, and that is great, but bear time is comin again and the old ikester can't wait.............................
IKE, Those are some tanker bears. Are your bear out in Utah and can you run in the spring there? I went up yesterday and found two bear tracks in the patchy snow. Needless to say it gave me the itch in a bad way. I love bear hunting in the spring and summer. after a winter of snow shoes and and sub-zero weather nothing like chasing a pack in a pair of shorts and sneakers.
Thanks High Desert Hounds and Stitch, as those photos bring back a memory or two...
As for the bears, I'd have to look but pursuit season has been starting in early April, 10th or 12th or so, but I don't miss with them usually until May. I use to go down on the south side of the Book Cliffs opening weekend (middle of April in those days) and try to get a run on some early boar. And I would get a run or two but the bears didn't usually hit the tops until the first week of May if memory serves......
Life is funny, I've treed and released lions all winter and now I have a couple people coming in the dirt to hunt lions???? I also have a trip scheduled to go see my mother and siblings so it'll be May or after before I load dogs for bear. But I'll have the hounds out most every weekend from here on out and I'm looking forward to it.
Good luck to you guys and may the hunting gods show favor on you, ike
first of may up here and damn i cant wait. dogs are chomping at the bit lion is over and nothing but a little trash breaking and roading to keep them ready. but we got more snow than last year and it sucked until mid may hope this year gets better in a hurry. good luck to ya all and catch many bear
coal burning stove, no natural gas if that aint country ill kiss yer a$$
god is good beer is great and people are crazy
I hear you talking when it comes to more snow, cause we were buried last spring which limited a guy in the areas I like to hunt. This past winter the snow has not been as deep, and I was hoping some of the upper country would be open during bear season. However, we just got clobbered with a spring storm and it looks like the high country got dumped on. I hope things are better by May....
I did go out the other day and worked the dogs for lions in the dirt, and it was fun to not have to mess with that mud, snow and ice. Hopefully things will dry out in the coming week and the hunting should be more enjoyable........
