Finally got a running dog & Bobcat place to
talk about our bobcat running.
Not many of us around.
I think only about 3 of us serious bobcat hunters in Kansas.
Clay, I have heard about your dads bobcat dogs for a long time.
I know he has the very best .
I hunt some times with the guys he knows in s/w Okla.
Lots of cats down there.
I have a pack of 7 head & some pups coming on.
Run most every night that the weather is ok.
We have lots of wind where I live.
When retired u can do that.
I hunt all night & sleep all day.
Can u do better than that?
Our Kansas cats can give some really good races.
I like hunting in south Tex.
Lots of cats there & they are easier to catch with the smaller trees
& high cat population.
Have dogs will travel.

Hipshooter,
Dad says thanks for the kind words! He has put lots of years and work into them.
The boys in SW OK sure could use some moisture, Dad says he is not going back out there again till it rains. Hootie says he might never see him again!
Hope the wind does not blow you away. It is bad here tonight steady @25mph and gusting to 45mph.
Come see us this summer. We are headed to Dad's camp in FL, 4-30-09 & will be back in AR 5-31-09.
Good Running to All!

I have never hunted with Hooty, but have talked to him.
I have buddys at Fredrick that hunt pigs.
They let us hunt their pig country for cats.
I like to hunt the river on 4 wheeler, no water,
Red river is dry west of Fredrick in Tex.
How is the cat population in Florida.
U guys will have fun down there.
Don,t let a gator or snake get u.

Re: Thanks Buddyw
Hipshooter,
Gators are a never ending way of life when you hunt FL. Dad will loose a hound every couple of years, and never a sorry or young hound; always one of the good ones. Ray Melton has an outstanding young hound Dad gave him that got caught by a Gator last year and escaped as the Gator bit into the Johnson and Tritronics collars around his neck. This must have shocked the gator a bit as he released Toby, who got away. He will carry the scars outside and inside all his life. He will not cross h2o anymore thats why Dad gave him to Mr. Ray, who does not have much h2o at Brackettville, TX.
You should have some good running in the Piney Woods east of Tyler. The Cats there have similar country as here, draw the right Cat and he will run you several hours.
Good Running and come see us when you can!

Re: Thanks Buddyw
Ok, I don't want offend anyone but I've made a Mistake with this Section.
First I appreciate your stories, but frankly I didn't read them because of where they were..
I don't like the Direction of this "running Dogs" section. I was more thinking Running dogs as hogs and Deer.. But after reading a couple of your guys's stories, it's apparent that this is not the correct topic. At least I'm someone who is interested in Bobcat hunting, and I just don't want to read a topic call "running Dogs", it is the last place I would think to look for Good Bobcat stories. I don't consider Bobcats running game, I think for the most part they are Tree Game.
It appears that your hunting style is not much different (if at all) then many BobCat hunting over here or anywhere for that matter. I'm not talking about Hunters that hunt Bears in the summer and Cats in the winter, I'm talking about 365 day cat guys. They do what it takes to catch cats no matter where they are, or what type of terrain they are in or what time of year it is.
I'll be changing this section later to Bobcat hunting,
Unfortunately for you southern guys that means that it will include Snow hunting also which is a little different than your style, However rest assure there are many cat hunters up north that do just fine without snow.

Re: Thanks Buddyw
Buddyw,
Your site, do what you need to do!
It is and will be the best site out in Ether World for the Hound Hunter!
Bobcat hunting is as challenging Hound Sport after the quarry is jumped as there is!
But it is entirely different in our part of the world than in yours! Not trying to sound vain but as I have expressed in other posts, Cat hunting in the Southern Piney Woods IS a RUNNING HOUND Sport! Very few Bobcats tree in this part of the world, which I know Northern and Western Bobcat hunters find hard to believe. Because of the habitat and the pressure you must bring to bear on the Cat, after a period of time (sometimes, like tonight, several hours) when the Cat is finally closely pursued it elects not to climb!
Again I am opening up a can of worms but the Best Cat Hound & or Hounds from your part of the country brought here, hunted in the style and manner you all hunt, or hunted with our style would not be successful. However the very Best Hound from the South going North or West will Show Good Sport especially if same hound is one of the Running Bred Hounds that will tree!
We have seen both of the above senarios happen many times! This should stimulate some interesting conversation, so I look forward to afformation or rebuttle to the previous statements.
Had a good story to tell from tonights hunt, but guess I better wait to see where to post it, or if I am BANNED after this!
Good Running to all!

Re: Thanks Buddyw
Buddy,
Do what u have to do.
We don,t care , just so we can talk about out bobcat hunting.
There are a good number of us serious bobcat hunters, mostly in Tex
but getting more farther north as the bobcat population has gotten a lot better in Okla & Kans. When the gov started the CRP program to plant grass in farm land in the late 1980,s
that really got the bobcats to expand. Kans has a huntable population now.
The gov planted turkeys also witch helped the bobcat population.
The bobcat is probably the toughest critter to catch with hounds.
The running dog is the prefered dog with most serious cat hunters. I run one or 2 tree dogs that can keep up with the speed dogs & they will find the cat a lot of times after the speed dogs have given up. mostly will wind the cat in the tree or find him in a hole or brush pile, this has cost me a lot of walking to the bay.
My opion u have to have the speed & drive hounds to catch the cats on a regular baises
in dry land mid west country.
Do what u have to do.

This is the right place to have these posting on bobcat hunting as what most people do not understand that it is completely different in the southeast and takes a running dog to bust the cut over timber and solid wall of briars and youpon. Bobcat hunting in the west and bobcat hunting in the east is as different as beer and whiskey and takes a different type of hound and This is a great forum to learn from.

Re: Thanks Buddyw
I understand that you guys like a different Style of dog,
However the Last two stories I read, there was absolutely No difference in most of the cat hunts I've been on over here without snow.
So All I'm saying is the story was Exactly the same, I could print that story here in the Oregon Newsletter, and No-one would know it was actually a hunt in Arkansas, or where ever it was,
The words of the story were exactly the same as we would use, and Ironically that story ended in a Tree, and the author didn't act like it was a big surprize. So maybe you guys are right, But your words, the Actual Text, stories and Hunting style is the Same as Many Bobcat hunters over here. It sounds like bobcat hunting.. Probaby not the Bobcat hunting that you hear about with snow pictures, but I envite you guys up here in September when the weather is hot 80-90 Degrees, many folks are bear hunting And we'll Go hunting with the cat hunters and I think you'll find out you guys have more in common than you think.. These guys are catching foxes also.. That's another "RUNNING DOG" sport that they are Treeing over here. We just want a Good mix of Running dogs that have really good Locating ability.
Now for the reason I'm doing this... It's entirely selfish, I want to read your stories, but I don't want to sift through all the other running dog stories.. myself and many other Bobcat hunters would really enjoy your stories and experiences, and we probably would not read or notices them if they were hiding in a running dog catagory.
So it's nothing personal, I would just like to read "ALL" bobcat stories, since that is my Game of choice.
Buddy..

Re: Thanks Buddyw
Just keep talking about bobcat hunting. Doesn't matter what heading it's under to me.
It takes some dang good dogs to catch them most anywhere. Better dogs in some places than in others but they're not easy anywhere. Even in places with high concentrations of cats and where they don't run quite so hard, there are still more people that want to catch them than there are people that actually are catching them.
