Spring Bears
Well the time is here once again. Bear season is just around the corner (April 11) and the dogs and I are chompin at the bit. Too bad I was up on the mountian last weekend in December like conditions. Snowy, cold and 100 MPH winds. Anybody finding any bear sign?
Guess I'll have to make it ELK instead of bear.....I seem to be able to find plenty of those!

Re: Spring Bears
Not allowed to chase spring bears with hounds in AZ so headed up to southern Utah on April 30th for the pursuit only bear and lion. Going with a buddy who heads north every year around this time.

Re: Spring Bears
I am in Arizona but I let my dogs run bears off our orchard during spring and summer, game warden knows and said its better than what would happen if I tried running them off myself... likly dead bears or I would have to call him to relocate all the time. Few years ago he even said "I can't help you this year so you will have to solve the problem yourself." Was not sure what that ment but allowing my dogs to run and tree the bears that get close to the orchard works well and its fun too!
We are getting a new warden here this year though... hopfully he is a decent guy also.
Re: Spring Bears
wish I had an orchard problem like you Tom. Thats some dang good training.

Re: Spring Bears
Congrats Hound 1. I went out yesterday and all I could find was a lion. Oh well. Just as well cause Bear didn't open until today. Woke up this morning to an inch of snow.
You can bet I'll be hittin those south facing slopes again next weekend though!!!
Good luck to all!!!

Re: Spring Bears
BGH, I turned out on a lion track, and they started cold trailing, and about an hour into the deal watching the gps, they went from moving at a snails pace to high gear, and then the GPS said treed, walked in and..........Well it wasn't a lion. The grass is starting to grow in the Books so they should be out in force here in the next few weeks.

Re: Spring Bears
Nice hound 1! Can't complain about that! I might hit the Books next weekend to see what I can round up.
Woke up this morning to about a half inch of the white stuff. My brother in law called and said he cut a lion so I skipped out on church
and went out to have some fun. Caught a little yearling on a north facing slope in about 2 and a half feet of snow!!! Just got back. Ouch!
Good luck to you all!!!

Congrats on the catch Hound 1. We went out yesterday and started a lion and ran it about 1 mile in a snow storm then it started snowing real hard and the dogs took it another mile but couldn't get it done. It put about 4 inches of snow on us in 2 hours.
I am glad some one is catching some game, Sounds like your still doing good BGH.
Good luck to you guys.
