Artificial Insemination
Artificial Insemination
Wondering what the process is to take semen samples...do you have to take the dog into the vet..or is this something that can be done at home?
And how long are the samples good for?
thanks,
mike.

Re: Artificial Insemination
When my brother-in-law was in vet school a bunch of students were standing around watching the teacher trying to "collect" semen from a bulldog. After quite a bit of watching and waiting one of the female students said "Try tickling his balls, that works for my boyfriend." Hope this saves you some time!

JC that was damn funny, been laughing and shaking my head for about a minute straight. I will probabyly laugh the minute I see you smart ass! On a serious note, I believe this isn't an at home method, go to your vet. If you know any dairy guys, odds are they'll have a tank as they do a lot of AI themselves and you could store it there. It can be kept for a long time, don't know exactly how long but for sure many years.

Re: Artificial Insemination
It is actually my Vets' sample. He keeps it in a nitrogen chamber.

Is this one of those Nitrogen chamber tanks, that Liontracker is talking about??
thanks,
mike.

Re: Artificial Insemination
Yes.
Choose your AI vet wisely, alot of them are not experienced enough.
Also, if your vet has his own tank, they usually charge $12 to $15 dollars per month storage fee.

Re: Artificial Insemination
The vet obtains the sample manually, just like your girlfriend would get it from you! hahaha, then they put a sample on a slide and look at it under a microscope to make sure it is of use and there are swimmers!
Then its stored in nitrogen chambers either at the vets office, or they will send it to a place that will hold store it properly for you. until you want to use it, and it can be stored like forever...
Vets usually charge about 100 bucks for this, and sometimes you have to drop off the dog and go pick it up later because this takes some time.

Re: Artificial Insemination
lol lol cute....
it takes a little while, its not like dogs are all horned up and blow their load in 2 seconds! **cough** (haha)
although at some more high end vet facilities, that do this kind of stuff often, then will actually have what they call a "teaser bitch" present which gets the dog goin! then the sample is easier to obtain!
They make take a little bit, so thats why they have you drop off the animal. If you choose to wait, your wait could take awhile. Thats all I'm saying.

Re: Artificial Insemination
I would of never guessed that the bars i go to were owned by high dollar vets, but that makes sense now, all those "teasers" makes more sense than i'm ugly, spend all my money on dogs and have no personality! Bency great thread thanks.
