I just put down my 16 year old (bone cancer) that was always abit shy around strangers, he hunted well and was a differnt dog when on a tree. Very fixated on the critter and just about anyone could walk up to him then. I think he just was not interested much in people he almost never came up to me for a pet but was always ready to go hunting, a good dog but not a pet. One good thing about a shy/sensitve dog is they can be trained much easier than a more bold/stubbern dog, however you can easily overdo the disapline and end up with a dog that cowers whenever you look at him...

I don't mind a shy timid dog. I don't care if the dog does not want to be petted or handled, (I've seen a few of those) as long as it makes a dog and it comes in when it is supposed too and it will load when it is time to go.

As long as me and the dog can get along we'll be ok. Buttttt If I have to waste too much time screw'n around trying to catch it around the truck when I am ready to go or HAVE to go to get to the dogs, we'll have problems.

Ah yea old Sam would come when called and I could call him off a tree when it was time to go home. He didn't start out that way though, took abit of work to get him to trust me. At first he would come when called but cower at my feet like he was in trouble and sort of freeze up. When I wanted to get him loaded, always had to leash him to load. Likly alot of people would have just culled him but he did hunt well and worked well with the other dogs so I gave him a good home. I don't realy like shy/timid dogs but if they hunt well its hard to just toss them aside.

A guest of ours found him at the top of the mtn in the snow, he was almost dead of starvation and could not walk but recovered fast and seemed to have been trained for lion, bear and bobcat... was mostly broken off deer but ate a few chickens before he learned that was bad  Tried to find the owner but all he came with was a shock collar, oh well it was thier loss. Funny thing about Sam was I could sew him up without him moving he would even fall asleep at times while I did.

Thats what I was tryin to say. Good luck with the dog. If they can be handled and I dont have to chase then they can live, if not they become turtle bait. Yall have a good one on this subject. You know what to do and you didnt need to even ask the question in my opinion cause of some of your earlier posts. Take care brother.

If your dog is not wanting to come in fear of being put in the kennel, you could work on letting her out a bit before dinner and feed her when you want to put her away, let it be her idea to go in and eat. My dogs beat me to the kennel everyday.

Now trying to catch a dog at a tree that knows you are trying to snap him up and lead him off is another story, don't know how to cure that one. I guess you just have to thank your stars you got one that has some drive.

If you can't catch them to put them in the truck you could try excersizing them by running them down the road behind the truck. Then when you stop they will be ready to get in the box and rest. If you can't catch one, then he probably needs a little more exersize.

I hunted her this weekend and my week of training at home didn't help much. I let her out to road with the dogs and all was fine. But when my buddy was down the canyon from me and had a cat treed, I went to round up my dogs from roading and couldn't catch her. So I drove aboout a mile down the road with her chasing my truck and went on to the tree. She showed up at the tree just milling around the dogs as she is not spooky like allot of dogs at the tree.

Couldn't jump the cat out so we went back to the truck and started hunting again. I just left her out with the dogs. She ran loose all day in camp because I couldn't catch her and I hunted a little Saturday night with her still out with the dogs. Finally in the middle of the night I left my dog box door open and she jumped in some how (as she does not load yet) and I finally had her.

Next morning I hunted and did not turn her out as it was Sunday and did not want to wait all day to try and catch her again. Kind of sucks because I treed a fox and got a couple of kick outs and she had to stay in the box.

The only thing wrong with this dog is she will not let a man catch her. You can get down on a knee and sweet talk her and she will get within 6-7 feet and that's it. She'll be wagging her tail and acting like she wants to play, she's not spooked.

If you have ever had a pup that was a little hard to catch around the truck and would run from you until you cornered it that's how this dog is. Except she is REALLY good at not letting you get your hands on her. She will flat go with the dogs when they strike, she roads really good, not spooky of the truck or strange dogs. I just need to get the little heffer to let me catch her and we'll be good. I had a knock down drag out 1 hour fox race Saturday night (unfortunately didn't tree it) and she was right there with them and came in with them like she is supposed too.

I'm going to keep working with her. She's got a ton of potential. I think this week I will use the "not feeding unless she eats out of my hand method".

I'll keep you posted.

Tie him out in front of a Wal-Mart on a busy weekend. Don't give up on the pup, give him some time to overcome it.

Your shy pup will be a product of the amount of effort [ or not ] that you put into the bonding / socializing of her. She's young and still needs time to feel confident and secure around you. Some pups are *born shy* as shyness is a dominat trait. Ultimately, she may only let you and someone else close to her, such as your wife, etc, handle her.

I too have a shy pup, born that way, and not as a result of miss handling from day one.
