chocolate bear 2 days in a row . . .

Post by Poundhound »

Treed a chocolate colored bear yesterday. Was a good race that started after my brother saw him in the road looking from one Mtn to another. He was able to put me on him. We chased him for four hours with some out of shape dogs - their first bear race of the year. I managed to pick up a dog now and again to give them a breather when I could then feed em back in closer to the front of the race.

Well, we left him to run him another day . . . . . . . AND TODAY WAS THAT DAY !!!

Darned if I didn't strike him across the valley from where we treed him yesterday. An hour and sixteen minutes later I am at the base of a tree with a chocolate bear in it again. Looks like the same bear to me. I know the photos don't do it justice because today he treed a hundred feet up a HUGE tree and he was tough to get pics of.

Here is one pic, flash was on so it was tough to see him.

Turned the flash off and got a pic of his color, but zoomed in and had trouble holding still enough for it to focus very well. Shows his color anyway.

Two races, two trees, I was feeling pretty good today. Proud of them dogs of mine today. Dogs were a little sore from yesterdays race, and it showed a bit. But they got a pop up race and all made the tree.

It always pays to leave game for another day. And you never know when that day will be. Guess I will see what happens tomorrow. :D :D

Ran this guy again on Friday. This time he beat us good. After having been treed twice he tried something different and it worked in his favor.

This time we started him in close proximity to where he started the first time, and for a while he ran the exact same pattern, until we kinda bumped him off it. Then he broke out into a clearcut, which I seldom see a bear do around here. We got a little footage of him crossing the clearing. Then he went on a hard downhill run into some of the thickest reprod we have, young trees mixed with blackberry bushes, and he ran a couple circles in there. Then he finally crosses a river that is flowing hard with some of our recent rains and hung the dogs up . . . . four and a half hours into the race.

Had I not gotten the video footage of this bear crossing the clearing, and the very similar pattern he ran, I would not have known it was this guy again. If I can figure out how, I will post the footage I have for all to see.

There is much to be said for leaving an animal to run another day. I have enjoyed my time with this one very much.

Until we meet again Cocoa Bear.
