how do you pick a puppy that you want to be a cat dog?

lets assume that you are picking a pup from a litter in your area. both the parents come from a line of good cat dogs. so know what else do you look for, or do you just reach in and grab one?

Find a good bred litter from cat dogs... then close your eyes... reach in and grab one.... LOL!

I agree with all that is said. I usually always get the runt of the litter, but close your eyes and pick or just grab the first one that you are attracted too.

If you get the pic of the whole litter I've had the best luck picking out the most "average pup". The one that is not the biggest or the runt, just right in the middle. Not the pup bouncing off the walls or the one hiding in the corner. I try to pick the one that doesn't stand out within the litter. Seems to be the best method I have found for lion hounds.

I asked my friend the same question the other day and in my area we hunt in the rocks so tight feet and good angualation of the rear legs is vary important. I would also ask the breeder which one he likes, he (or she) has spent allot more time w/ them and if they are keeping one which ones made the short list of possible keepers.
I go for the runt most of the time.

if size is the only difference

I buy three and then make my final pick when they are a year old. Buying them one at a time it takes an eternity to get some good ones.

The whole litter is much better but 3 is better than just one anyday. I would never buy a single pup in a litter and I have found that 2 aint quite good enough either.

I normally let all the experts pic their pups first then just take what is left. got some of the best one with that method.

Yeah careful not to pick the pup "bouncing off the walls" you may get one that will be jumpin outta windows and picking fight with rattle snakes...lol :twisted:

Find a good breeder for cat dogs and you likely won't go wrong. I have found that a good cat dog comes as much from the training as from the breeding.

Be selective in the breeding and put the time in and you wont be dissapointed

the method I have used with great success is stand their away from the litter and let one come up to you.... they are usually the independent ones.
