Tracking Collars

What's the best tracking system around? I also see a lot of guys selling off their tracking systems and going over to garmins (gps)...I live in CA and don't think I can use that here. What's your opinions on the best system for the least $$? What about used v. new?

the best quality and longest ranged would prolly be a tracker classic. there nice but a lil pricey

As for the GPS collars we can use them here in Cal. also no tree switch's. Thanks the antis for that....

Just to clarify live to hunts post, we "cant" use GPS here in California. I knowChris just made a typo... I have an icom with yagi antenna with the booster, and i use the johnson collars and it seems to work as good as any as long as i have the booster on. Just last week my dogs were gone on track and my buddy with his blue box with a 5 element antenna couldnt get them, my marshall didnt get a beep but the old stand by icom finally got a beep on them but i did have to use the booster... I really like my Magnum 8000. I can track any frequency and have as much range as anyone and better.

I have been using Kliens collars for years....It's not broke so why fix it right?

I hunted with a group once, one guy had a tracker one a quick track, the tracker had a hard time getting much of anything and the quick track picked up the dogs fine. I am sure tracker works well for flatlanders but here in Idaho it was haveing some problems in the mountians. I use wildlife collars for their changable batteries and durability, but when i bought my quicktrack reciever i looked into their collars and they seem to be just as good as wildlife's, and quicktrack is pretty fair priced.

I too have seen that with the tracker here in Northern Cal. I told Newby to talk with the guys out here in the west see whats working for them. When the tallest Mt. back east is smaller then some of our foothills the same boxes might not work as good. I know when your hunting in spots that change from 6500 ft up on top of a ridge to 1500 ft down in some draws. and only be 1/2 mile from the ridge you were just on boxes work much diffrent then some states where the dont even have ridges over 1500 ft. The one thing I would say is buy the best you can get. I dont mean you have to run out and break the bank. Or have you family go with out food for the next month. But get the best you can or wait tell you can get a better setup. You might have this for some time and when your dogs are out and thats the only tool you have in getting them back its money well spent. I would talk with all your hunting buddys see what they use. See about trying them out before you buy. You might also want to go to some of the field trials and see whats out there talk with them. See if they will let you try them out. Really do your homework.
