Guess what I just found? Someone who catches lactating females with their dogs.

It was kind of them to contact me privately.

I have put off saying this for so long, and finally got brave enough to say it. I myself have not witnessed it.

It sure is tough being ugly and wrong on the same day.

I could have gone in and edited everything because he litterally contacted me as soon as I had written it. But I think it is just meant for me to eat some humble pie. So I am eating it. it sure is good :joker

God is just saying "how come I get all the stupid ones?"

Sorry God. shouldn't have used your name without asking first.

But now that the ice is broke: any more data like this? If you did catch one in that state, was she fresh or starting to dry up or ???

I don't know about lactating cats not being able to be run on scent because I don't usualy kill female cats to get a look and none of the ones my dogs treed ever had kittens with them. I think its a toss up between male and female bobcats. Also the cats here must be differnt from those cats that run for hours at a time. Here they tree in less than 30 mins most times and don't run all that far. Might also be the terrain? I only hunt a few canyons around my house very steep and alot of under-brush with plenty of trees 20-40 feet tall for the cats to climb, most end up in pine trees that are closer to 60 feet tall.

But you did mention bears as well and just last year my dogs trailed up a female with a little cub, she was still in her den but had been out several times to get water judging by the trail between the creek and her den. Distance from the den to the creek was around 400 yards so it was not far but she was definatly in the den and had not been out for several hours judging from the tracks she had left. This was in march and I was not thinking bear when they started the track.

My dogs listen well so I was able to call them off before it got ugly and we left her alone after I snapped a few pictures. The cub was very tiny, maybe 5-10 lbs.

West Texas Curs, Please tell me EXACTLY what these trashy dogs of yours are and how they are bred. Tell me the name of their momma and their daddy, and all their littermates. I hear some trashy dogs can be bought for a song.
David, you wouldnt wont none of this stuff here. They are mutts, that get lucky and run accross a cat now and then.We do have a very good population of cats here.I try to hunt every chance I get,so them mutts are gonna trip over a cat now and then.I hope you werent thinking I was braggin on my dogs.I just thought since I have only caught boar cats they have to be easier to catch.Dont read to much shit into what I write.

I would like to hear what Mr Clay would say about running sowcats.
I have treed momma cats with kittens before.
We don,t kill momma cats so I don,t know if they were nurseing or not.
U can till when the dogs are running kittens, they just can smell enough to
hit & miss a little. This happens in the summer as we can hunt cats year around.
I am going to hunt far north western kansas Sat & Sunday. Only few miles from Colorado line.
some big canyon country, 10 mile long canyon with no trees. We can drive on the top & watch the dogs work
the canyon floor & the rim rocks.
I will post a report later.

I got a pretty good idea what Mr Clay would say about running sow cats since he is the one that did all he could to let me save face before I got locked in by someone elses post. He is a kind man.

I have experienced the hit and miss thing and I have thought that is the same way it is with a sow that is beginning to dry up.

Where I live now and have for 25 years it is almost impossible to stay on a cat except in the winter. We do not have enough cats to have straight cat dogs, so coon or bear will ruin most any race outside of winter, and ruin a number of them in mid winter also.

But I have had my dogs accidentally land in the bobcat nursery. I mean tiny little kitten tracks three or four weeks old I would guess. The dogs could tell something was there but they could do nothing with it. Could not find a track out, and could not locate the kittens. They had to be right there somewhere close.

I once also saw tiny kitten tracks in the snow as early as January. I had heard that bobcats might breed any time, but I never saw any evidence of it till then. The dogs were trailing a cat through there and never showed any sign of noticing all the kitten tracks buzzing around in there.

Any body ever heard of kittens born at odd times like that?

p.s. Tom jr that is a really cool photograph.

After reading all of the posts here...... I just find it strange how people refer to male and female cats by different names being from where they are from in this country. If I may interject here and clarifly the true feline terms to describe both female and male cat species. Males are TOMS and females are QUEENS! They are not boars and sows! Sorry that has been making me crazy reading that.   Oh and young cats are called KITTENS not cubs!

Sorry if I come off as the Alex Trebek of the cat world here, but I have to state the facts!

First off I am not a man    Secondly, asking I am from England is fighting words.  I am of Irish/Scottish heritage.

As for the Queen thing..... Just saying it how they are classified as female felines.

Ms. Big Horn Posse,

What source are you quoting from, reference the names for male and female Bobcats.

I have in my possesion two Doctorial Thesis concerning Bobcats. These were prepared for LSU and TAMU in the 70's and 80's respectively and in BOTH the terms used were Tom for males, and Sows for females and little ones were reffered to as Kittens.

Both parties were granted their DR., one female (Lady) one male (Man) so I am very interested to know the source from which you quote?
