wondering about B&Ts

I have a few questions i hope you all might be able to help me out some. I am primarly a Plott guy but i do realize all breeds have thier goods and bads. Black and Tans would rate second (to me. please no hate mail!),then the walkers. then on out i really don't care for the others much. So in time when i get a place were i can add to the dogs i have already (3), I will be looking for a good fast B&T. My questions are, are Ken Duncans dogs really that good? I have seen them at some nubgha trails and talked breifly with Ken, but in the hills on a long steep race are they able to keep up and finish, and how are they at forceing tough game up? Also I met a guy who had a coulpe dogs out of Iowa, i think, they looked the part for a B&T but were smaller 50-60 pounds, and were sceaming fast. Does anybody know anything about some B&T blood like that? Like i said it will be some time before i can get one so no salemen please> I am just looking to learn some more about the breed and were the best place to get what i am looking for. thanks Lance

I prefer the smaller, faster type Black and Tans, mine are Albert bred

How Small is small?? What weight and height do your dogs run? Is that true with all Albert bred dogs?

My male dog Bandit Which is the foundation for the rest of my BTs is 62lbs in running shape and that is lean muscle. Some of the Albert dogs are bigger and heavier but they are typically tighter built then the old school BTs. They usually have shorter ears also. NOT Short ears. just less droopy then the old fashioned dogs.

Hey Lbell the best advice I can give you is to go to Kens and go hunitng with him and his hounds. Spend some time with him in his kennel, go over some pedigrees to see where his hounds have come from. He has 2 really nice males that are nohting but "Albert" bred one out of Eli and one out of Three time plus he has a few really nice "Duncan" males that are tightly line bred with out cross's to Smithhurst, Hicks (Albert), Donlovey, Gosset. His foundation Sire from the late 70's was directly out of Gentleman Jim x Jone's Southern Dixie which if you do your home work Jim has had a huge impact on what the breed is today. I posted a pic in the post on Ken's kennel and there was a pic of Four Time Albert with Gene hicks that Ken now ownes. I have run Duncan hounds for over 12 years now and I even competed in the world hunt with a Duncan hound. I have owned several Hicks (Albert) bred hounds. All of Hicks main stud dogs (Big Time, Two Time, Three Time, Chance, Sailor, Rider, Eli) have always had long ears with the OL' B&T look which they got from the old style Gosset breeding his hounds of come out of. I now owne several Northern/Kansas bred hounds. It is up to what you are looking for. I have brought the Northern/Kansas style dogs in for an out cross plus they go back to the same foundation hounds as Duncan, Hicks. Duncan hounds are on average 70-75lbs so are Hicks all the Hicks and Ducnan hounds I have seen have had the good ol' B&T look. I have seen sum shorter ear and build hound out of both breeders. Also have seen bigger eared and bodied hounds from both breeders.

Out of the above mentioned lines I have seen good and bad but mostly good. I have seen heart, desire, fast track speed, cold nosed, agile, tree power. I hunt biggame (bear, lion, bobcat) pleasure and comp coon hunt and consitantly tree game, wish I could say I treed every time I went out but then I would be blowing smoke up your A$$ like a salesmen. LOL

At the end of the day its going to be your decision and what style of dog you want. Both Hicks, Duncan, are reputable breeders and houndsmen and would feed most anything they produce. Check out the Northern/Kansas breeding. Go to ukcdogs.com or coondawgs.com and go to the B&T classifieds and check out the other lines. Sounds like you have plenty of time to do your research. Definatly recomend go and hunting with the line of dogs that interest you. A B&T is a good addition to any pack. Good luck in your venture.

Thanks that answers the Questions I had in an honest manner, all dogs are differnt and a pup is only as good as he has ability and chance to become. That would be about the size I will be looking for. I just didn't want to get a hunfred pounder. thanks

I think there is an Idaho Houndsman on here that runs Black and Tans. He goes by Snowy River Black and Tans I think.

black and tans are the only way to go. I also prefer a smaller faster b@t though. when a walkers feet are sore and they cant run any more we still are runnin them black and tans.

outlaw 3. your black and tan is not purebred. The original and best hunting black and tans look similar to a bloodhound just in much better shape. should weigh 60-100lbs long ears slobbered up mouth deep chest medium length neck. All the b &tans picutre I have seen on this thread dont look like the original.

I also have plotts and one black an tan! The only stock i have dealt with is egli's ragin line! I have killed bears to egli black and tans at 7 months old. I like them and they do really well,the ones i have owned, 5 of them all together and have had good luck with them! I wish i knew more bout the other lines to help but sounds like these other guys know their stuff!

does it really matter if outlaws dogs are purebred. they look a whole lot like my dogs.tight built and fast. and judgeing by his pictures they get the job done right and thats all that matters.i've seen pure breds that would not run a dang biscut.

Hey blackandtan79. I was just implying it. I feel so much more rugged or tough with a purebred black and tan not a rotty and a black and tan mix.
