Thorns or Slivers?

Post by BuckNAze »

Am I correct when I heard that if you soke your dogs paw in Epsom Salt and warm-hot water that it will help with the thorn or sliver to make it come out? My lead dogs paw has been bugging her but she can run on it when she wants to and nothing seems sprained. I have grabbed everywhere, moved everything with enough force that she would pull or whimmper if it hurt but nothing. My wife just found out where its coming from and it seems to be something wedged in by her dew claw or whatever its called. She was licking/biting at it when I noticed it and asked my wife to look at it and thats where she will pull back if my wife trys to touch it. My dog is tough and doesnt ever show any sign of pain I have found out and was going to take her to the vet for x-rays but this seems to be the problem. Does epsom salt and hot water work?

I have had good results with it. I think it temorarly softens the skin and if the torn is infected puss pushes it out. I waited til my dog was in sleep mode, middle of the day and just put his foot in the water, not too hot though warm to the touch. Hold it in there for around 5-10 mins and repeat as nessisary. After soaking try to gently squeeze the puss and thorn out... I have also lanced the swollen part and that works well too.

I have one dog that seems to not watch where he is going or somthing and gets thorns all the time. Hes also not to smart, other day he dug up a yuca while after a rabbit atleast I didn't have to feed him that day  The webbing between his toes was all torn up and had thorns in it. He also had thorns in his lipps and ears and was just a bloody mess but atleast he was happy

Most times the thorn will eventualy work its way out but some times those on the feet will fester and cause problems.

Yeup, I believe I actually followed your advice on another forum thread and had the misses go to the store and get some Epsom Salt and we soaked it for awhile and a lot more puss came out. We wiped all the puss off and repeated it. Gonna have to do it again tonight. I couldnt figure out for the life of me since Thursday what was wrong with her. She ran just this weekend even after I saw she was limping but she must of been tricking me to thinking she was ok because she was jumping, running, trying to jump off of the box! Which is about 6-7 ft off the ground, luckily I caught her in mid air. She will be out of commission now that I know whats wrong and wont be going out till she shows me she isnt limping. But thats definetly what it is. She has been out so much and this is the only time this has happened, she is pretty damn smart. She tough as nails to and wont show any pain (especially in hunting mode) which I like but dont like at the same time, hard to tell when there is something wrong with her

I was just thinking that today too, Thanks Bigboarstopper. My buddy has some pennicilian at his house, maybe Ill ask if I can get some from him. She seems to be almost 100x better today then yesterday, she is walking on it fine now and just soaking it twice yesterday did wonders. Im gonna soak it once or twice a day the rest of the week and see how that helps too. Hopefully by friday she may be able to go out, if not no biggy but she didnt show any signs of pain today, although she tends to hide it from me good when she knows she may be going hunting (usually when I let her inside to go through the house to the truck she knows, so now whenever I let her in she acts like nothing is wrong)

if you can see where the thorn went in ---- try a large syringe -- suck it out --- :)

we have a lot of thorn apples here and either im allergic or they are poison- i have a permanent lump on my leg from one i never got out-
:) -

- never used this on a dog but used this on myself a few times :D

ive used a big syringe that came with safeguard paste -- not the single horse size- next size up -

-if you cant find one , you could cut the end off any syringe - shave the hair -

ive also used epsom salts on myself to get infection out -- the warmer the water, the better it seems to work
-might be hard to convince dog of that , :) - i dont know how it works ,but it does - draws the infection out --

used to use " black salve " on my cows for any infection near the skin , it will make it come to a head and drain -

lol i had to look it up ... "black salve" is Ichthammol Ointment
when the tailgate drops
