Just a guess here, but I think the electronic solenoid that engages your front hubs has gone out on you. In 4 low, even though your tranfer case has dropped you into a lower gear, and your dash light has come on, your front hubs still haven't engaged so you're not really in 4WD......you only think you are.

That part is called a thermo something-or-other, if I wasn't so lazy I'd dig out my old repair manual and look it up. The part used to cost about $100 and they are pretty simple to replace. I went through a couple of them in my old Chevy.

if it has the electric controls instead of the manual shift, I think the solenoid down on the front differential might be stuck.

Yep,even the early 90's chevy's with auto hubs and an actual level to engage the 4x4 had a solenoid to lock it in.It was a pretty common problem the solenoid for ours was only like 13 bucks.

I would bet that the shift motor went out of it. It bolts onto the left side of your transfer case with three bolts and isn't too big of a deal to change. I have a '99 and it did the same thing. If you get someone to hit the 4WD button while you are underneah listening, you shold be able to hear the shift motor engage, which means that you're getting juice, but it won't stop in 4 HI. That's what mine did anyway and it sounds like the same thing. gets kind of old driving around in 4 LO doesn't it!
