I personally wouldnt use a mastiff breed. They usually dont have the stamina required to get there quick enough.

The best way to go is American Bulldog, the'll out run and out last most other breeds, my second choice whould be a Dogo. AB's & Dogo's are the only way to go. It'll take two pits if not more to do what one AB or Dogo can do by them selves. TMO

All i have used before is pitbulls and one big gritty blue tick hound that thought he was a pit. The trouble with amereican bulldogs or Dogos is price. I am not gonna spend 700 to 1000 dollars for a dog that may get kilt tomorrow. After I posted on here i talked to some austrailian fellas that have had great success with mastiff and mastiff crosses. However, their standards and our standards may be different. lol

And I notice a couple of you said. out run out last and get there quik enough. We dont turn our catch dog loose untill we can see the bay and in timber that usually 30- 50 yards. Do you guys turn your out and let them run with your bay dogs?

When the strike dogs got em bayed solid or stopped I dump my catchdog at 100 yards or less. I also have catchy strike dogs. So the catch dogs itsnt hanging out there in the wind with no help. As far as catchdogs go. The cheaper the better. I have always got free pitbulls from the pound. I havent even payed an adoption fee. Ive gone there and told them which one i liked and if they are gonna put it to sleep give me a call. they will call you in a week or so. Pitts never get adopted for the most part. I learned this from a friend of mine and they even delivered one to his house. There are only 2 things I look for in a perfect catchdog. Easy on the leash, Dosent fight with other dogs. Thats it. The mellower the dog the better. I personally have never had a catchdog that didnt catch ina matter of a few hunts. Little bit of positive encouragement and they are big boar stoppers. IMO you dont need to get a dogo or anything that you need to pay money for. Ive always vested and collared my catchdog.

bigger dogs control bigger hogs better that's all there is to it. i've yet to see a real pit that can control a hog as well as a bigger AB or dogo. that said, i'll go w/ bull breeds from the pound any day cause 90% will try to catch and maybe 70% will catch & about every 4th or 5th one will be real good to great. and they don't cost near as much.

Well said Pops, all I was trying to say is, There is no replacement for Displacement. Bigboarstoper do you know Jeramy and his brother Rusty down in Carmel? I have never had a Dogo but have hunted behind a few all I have had are AB's and they have never let me down, but like said before, my start dogs are real catchy too. I guess it's back to the matter of CHEVY's or FORD's LOL.

That's for sure. Over here no one leads a 'catch dog' in on a boar that has been run to a stand still by a pack of bailers. What you guys call 'running catch dogs' we call 'luggers' or 'finder/luggers' and that is what we use most of the time. Some run bailers (bay dogs) with our luggers and some dogs are 'drop dogs' used from the back of the ute and dropped onto a mob in the open crop country but generally most dogs are bred and used to find, chase and hold their own pig. Don't get me wrong, I run catahoulas with my bull arab and a dane/bully/boxer but the mastiff used in the crosses here is mostly the bull mastiff. A line of great dane/bull mastiff has been going here for about 30 years with great success hunting all types of terrain; mountains, river/channel country, crop country.

Here the hunting style requires a leggy dog that can find a pig, pull it up and hold it, often miles away from the hadler, then quite often running on to try and get another from the mob. Not walked in and ran for 50 yards to hold for a minute or two... Horses for courses I guess.

I much prefer a smaller catchdog if possible. It seems a lot of the bigger dogs like Dogo's and AB dont deal real well with the heat and humidity here. They eat less, dont take up much room in the box, you can throw them on the back of a horse or 4-wheeler and go. They best way for us to usually catch good hogs is with one good bay dog and a good smaller catchdog.
This is the catchdog we use now 1/2 dogo 1/2 pit maybe 50#s soaking wet with collars and vested. :D
