Hitting the timber again.

Post by Hipshooter »

All the wheat will be cut by July 4th here.
Can,t start a cat here when Wheat is not cut.
Cats just lay out in the wheat day & night. & wait for a rabbit, mouse or bird to come by. You just can,t start one in May or June here.
I will be hitting the timber & CRP 3 times a week after July 4th.
Don,t have much timber here, mostly farm ground.
Have dogs will travel.
Can only hunt starting about 2:00 AM, as is to hot before that, dogs will drink there bucket full of water up every night that is in the box it is so hot, but they will get used to the heat.
and dew will come about then some times.
Dogs usally can,t smell good enough till late in the morning.
For the last several days it has been high 90o & up to 100o almost every day here.
Just a little up date on Kansas hunting.
Good hunting to u all.

Hipshooter,

I have just talked to Dad in FL. They have been having tought luck, been geting rained out. Had only had one Race, on Fri. the day they arrived.

This morning they were again rained out so came back to town and ate a late breakfast. On the way to camp they decided to go in the back way and put the Rig Dogs up. Sure enough about noon Rivers winded a Cat off the side of the road. As Harold was putting the Rig dogs down, Rivers went out and rabbit jumped the Cat and brought it back across the road.

To make a hour long Race short enough for here, it is enough to say Mr. Harold has a Pack of sure-nuff Cat Hounds. Dad said this big ole Tom had a real set of tricks including going through a culvert then doubling right back through another culvert right next to the first one. It must have been a heck of a Race as it accured in the daylight when Hunters could see it as well as hear it.

This old Tom must have thought he was the Mike Tyson of the Bobcat World as he tried to fight it out. This did not work out well for him!

Good Running to All!

Hipshooter,

Dad says the temps are in the low 90's in the day and the high 60's at night.

The Rivers Hound might be as good a two and a half year old as Dad has raised!

Come watch him in Action!

Hit the timber last night.
I went over to my friend & fellow cat hunter,s country.
85 miles, was perfect night, heavy dew, I think that is bad if they get very far behind.
Was in the 60o temp.
1st thing out of the box, some got Pi$$ed on by a stripped kitty.
Roaded about 2 miles, James 10 year old dog opened, He is very tight lipped if it isn,t real; hot track. We had 10 dogs, all got with him, but none could open, the cat went about 1/2 mile into an irrigated circle of corn. Finally my 6 year old female opened good
& carried the track mostly by her self in the corn for about 45 min.
Still none of the other dogs could open. Finally we heard a few barks from some of the other dogs. but not much, had several losses, but they kept after it.
Don,t know why they could not move it much. Maybe fertlizer or Chem on the corn ground.
Girlie my female just kept hammering, finally my pair of 2 year old females hit it hot & then they all got after the cat good. They smoked him in the corn field for about another 30 min, then it got to hot for the cat & he decided to find a new zip code.
Out of there he went dogs still smoking him, He went about a mile & got on a very sandy road & the race blowed up. My female would not quit & took 2 hr to get her in. She just would not quit, I finally had to buzz her to get her in. & my 7 month old pup got lost in the corn field, but finally came to the road.

I got home at 6:AM
O The life of a cat hunter.

Hit the timber again last night.
2 nights in a row about got this old man down.
Going to be cool again tonight, maybe another good night.
but then going to be hot the rest of the week.
Only took 5 min to get cat started last night, really good race.
2 1/2 hours.
Dogs did really good keeping him going.
They were in jungle type briers all night.
Dogs are not out ramming & jamming on their chains this morning.
They are fast asleep, after a hard run last night.
We treed the cat.

Hipshooter!

Good to hear about your good running!

When scenting conditions are bad you sometimes wonder what kind of Hounds you are feeding. The last two nights we have struck a total of 13 different Bobcat. That is because we hunted a total of 15 hours these two nights. Each night we have hit some that were too cold to really do anything with.

However we have hit two Cat each night that were Hot. Each time we backed tracked the Cat both ways. to Quote Dad "Damn Glad we are not selling Hounds". On Saturday night we jumped a Cat and ran him an hour before treeing him. As we were loading Hounds that front that you all had Thursday hit here with Wind, Hail, and lots of rain.

You would think that would have helped our Scenting conditions. Wrong! It has been so hot and had gotten dry, so Our Theory is that when the rain came the moisture went right into the ground and was taking the animal scent with it.

If this is not the case it is a darn good Excuse for Sorry Hounds?!

Again Glad to hear you are having Good Luck!

Hit the timber twe
night 3 nights in a row.
Did not strike a cat
Was not in good country.
Old Girly`s eyes was swelled & bloody from the night before
Running in the briers, She carries the track & gets right in there
with the cat, I think some of the dogs wont get in the briers like she will.

To hot now & windy,
Will let the dogs rest till better weather.
I just have one pack , no replacements.
The young dogs can hunt every night,
But the older dogs need a day off.

Cats were not walking last night.
Could not get a bark.
There was a little lighting in the sky, not close,
Old timers till that lighting in the sky,
Cats don,t walk.
What u all think.
Old wifes tale or some truth.

Hipshooter,

We did not go last night, me and the young Hounds are both still knocked out from Tuesday night. Dad says he just can't raise either Hounds or Sons as "Tuff as he Used to". Oh well!

As to lightning, here in the last few months every time that there is a storm coming we have had good luck.

We have read in some of the PhD student strudies Dad has, that bobcat like to hunt and walk before a Storm or when the Barameter is falling. They will then wait till well after the storm passes before traveling again. This is not always the case, but most of the time. John Kulish in his book "Bobcats Before Breakfast" spoke to this quite well.

I am told that Coyotes on the other hand will waite till after the Storm passes before traveling.

Just out thoughts!
