This is a tuffer question than you think. Human friendship is extremely important to all of us and Our Creator. I have several outstanding dogs I'm looking forward to seeing in Heaven and renewing our friendships and hunting. I've spent years training any good dogs I've had but if one of my friends wants to borrow it I have to decide if our friendship is more valuable than my dogs life. Look at it this way. If you got wiped out by wolves or your pack got ran over and you needed a good dog to help your worthless trainees on the right track, would you be willing to borrow your friends dog and jeopardize your friendship if you lost his dog. Would you get irritated at him if he didn't loan you a dog because he didn't trust you?
I actually gave two different top notch dogs that were about over the hill on age to two different guys to get their packs going. One dog died from exposure on the trip home because the guy left him in the open pickup back at 20 below zero for a 3 HR. drive. I probably won't give that kid another dog and he was extremely heart broken but we are still friends. I'd probably loan him another good dog or give it to him because I do value friendships but I doubt he would ask. One other dog was actually a real help for the guy and he got his two pups going before my old female died. He's still my friend too but you know I actually never have met the guy only on the phone. I think I'll shake his hand, offer him a chew and have a good chat about huntin when we finally meet and I'll gather up all my old outstanding dogs and we'll go on some good all night coon or bear hunts together. Think about it twice before you say no. God Bless Hillbilly Bill

Had anuther thot on this subject. Most of us now have wolves in our huntin area and we all are willin to take a little chance that we can catch a lion or bear and not get our pack wiped out. We all know them wolves have one thang on their minds and that's to kill and eat every dog we got. We still take a chance on it but then we are reluctant to loan one of our dogs to a FRIEND who's only thought about our dogs is to keep them alive at all costs. So, do we trust a wolf more than a friend ? gotta git. Hillbilly

If you don't feel comfortable loaning out a hound, loan out yourself ,hound, time, companionship and experience. that covers alot of the issues. If they just want to borrow a dog just to fill a tag that should give a indication as to his priorities. I would be willing to spend a substantial amount of time hunting with someone to help them.

I'm sorry fellas but I see my dogs as part of the family and I wouldn't loan out my kids or my wife to anyone so my dogs stay with me. Now if someone has some pups they want to get started they are more then welcome to tag along with me, but under no circumstance are they getting control of my dogs. I loaned a female once to a "good" friend and he had her for three months and when she came back she was pregnant by his wife's cocker spaniel. That was the end of that friendship and the end of me loaning dogs.
