I dont know about where you come from, but where I come from up here in Washington the bears get ran so much that most of them are too smart to tree and you either have to bay them up on the ground or shoot them crossing a road. Some will eventually tree up but Ive chased them for over 8 miles, according to the Garmin my buddy has, and they never treed. Im not expert but it seems to me that some bears just wont tree, call it being too smart or whatever, just my very little experience on it

Thats not due to being over chased, its due to the dogs doin the chasing, not very many bears won't climb or bay with bear dogs forcing them to. I'd look into some different dogs if what you are describing is happening to you

I've been running with a small pack of hounds and we get them in a tree. There is usually some baying on the ground first especially if all three don't make it to the bear. Several of the chases have been over 12 miles according to the Garmin. Both myself and my buddy are carrying Garmins and stay close to the dogs.

I liked the picture and the story. Who cares what all happened. I was going to post a picture of the bull elk I hopefully take on my draw hunt this fall, but I'm afraid that if he's only 350 I would get told that I should have used a plott and I would for sure have reached that 400 mark.

Bearkiller wrote:Is shooting a bear while crossing the road fair chase? I know you do what you do to kill bears on the permits but I don't see the point in bragging about it. The dogs didn't catch it. They just made enough noise and someone was smart enough to know where the bears cross to whack one. Again, I know permits are a different story than most guys have but there are plenty of bears being CAUGHT that are just as big or bigger. Now thats something to talk about.

Bearkiller, is it illegal to shot a bear crossing a road? You may not think it is fair chase and that is your opinion, but if these guys want to shoot a bear that way, SO WHAT!

Nice bear. Bid enough to make Ole Bearkiller jealous.

Oh, one more thing.
It was good you had a couple of Plotts there, he probably would have gotten away otherwise. LOL

Well the bear was bayed up tight and if you know anything about western washington you would know that some of that stuff is almost impenetrable the bear had broke several times when they went in getting within just a few feet .
That being said i have hunted three of the dogs and seen them with bear on the ground . The bluetick is a great bay dog and will not leave a mean bear and the plotts they were biting the bear even after they were caught they were not suicidal but they were biting the bear and had no quit .

I asked a question. One I've pondered many times.

Yes larry plotts rule and any other breed is inferior, blah blah, we have all heard you before. Great bear Ryan, dont listen to everyone who is negative, they just try to start shit on forums and gets out of hand.

real nice bear man id be proud with a hell of a shot like you say too and from what i hear and have seen a little bear that get chased alot dont like to tree and at the first sight of man run like hall and there ain't a dog to stop em the guy thats bein a dick is probably jealous and has to shoot his bear or chase off of baits and there to fat to run far and to full so they just climb a tree i seen a bear run where we had 4 real good duncan bear dogs fight one on the ground for 3 hours and couldn't get it to tree and just so happened it gets ran all the time cause of where it always crosses the road all the time
its better to tree and let live then tree and kill to never be ran again
