Fox Hunting

I just want everyone to know that I love running fox with my young dogs! That is so much fun. I just sit in one spot pull out my lounge chair and listen to them run in circles around me. So different from bear hunting. I dig it!

Dad used to start his pups on Grey Fox when he spent more time in FL.

BBGH, where you running your dogs at? I am having a hard time finding fox country. I have plenty of Bobcats on my places but would love to try my dogs of fox. Let me know if you need some company some time. More than happy to return the favor on some bob hunting.

Hell I just wish all the yotes were dead so I wouldnt have to think about one leaving the country if the hounds get on them. But to stay on topic, there is NOTHING in this world sounds as pretty as a good pack running upight on a close running grey.

To answer your question Tony, I run fox all around my house. I moved up to Nor Cal about 4 years ago and have never ran fox until I moved here. I have always bear hunted and then cooned in the off season. But at my house we have a fox problem. I wake up in the morning to find my lawn full of garbage because the greys are getting into the cans at night. At first I thought it was coons until I caught a whole pile in the trash one night, it shocked me. I didn't know a fox would do that. I was talking to a great friend of mine (old time bear hunter) and he told me that fox was one of the best way to teach your young dogs how to track and tree. So I started sicking my pups on those greys and now that is one of my favorite things to do in the off season. My biggest concern was that they would take to coyotes but the fox must have a different scent because I haven't had a problem with them running them more then usual.

As far as telling a good Fox Story: Last month I was talking to a good buddy of mine on the phone and I saw this grey walk across the hill. I told my buddy I had to go. I cut all my dogs loose. They ran up the hill screaming and the chase was on. After about 45 minutes of running this fox they sounded like they had it caught. I get up to the dogs and all four of them where in a twenty yard circle all barking in a different hole. That old grey gave me and the dogs the slip again! If you are looking for a good fox hunting area around Fresno head up out of Mariposa to the "Merced River Recreation area". I did a lot of fox and bear hunting in there before I moved. Lots of manzanita down low with pines mixed in them. Pines up higher. Lots of good roads. Good grey fox population. It's a nice spot.
