Bloodhound as a cat dog?

Post by DeVuono311 »

Alright, so here's the question. How many of yall have heard of people runnin, bloodhounds as a cat dog, sure maybe they aren't the fastest dogs, but they have a nose like a machine. Cold trail, Hot trail, etc. You use to hear of guys runnin bloodhounds as the primary hound, then everyone got into trying to make the "perfect" breed. Obviously that hasn't been the case otherwise thats all you would hear. But keeping it on subject on hand. Whos heard of bloodhounds running bobcat or mountain lion currently, if so where? Also feel free to share other good breeds ya'll know of.

I believe you will have "a long row to hoe", finding a bloodhound like that in America today.

As we know it takes a different kind of cat dog in different country and one size does not fit all. Mountain west and southwest bobcat hunting especially on bare ground is a place where some bloodhound types have really made their mark.

Elliot S. Barker famous New Mexico Game Warden and Author of the great book ( When Dog Bark Treed). Had a crippled bloodhound named Red that made a mark as a bobcat catching fool in the Vermejo Ranch Country. Several of the better bobcat/lion dogs I have owned have had some blood pooch in them. But if I was really out looking for a bobcat dog for the western type I explained I would look for something else. But I don't need to.

I wouldnt waste my time personaly. I guarantee their slow. And they probably eat twice as much. Anyways i've run 2 3 and 4 day old lion tracks man, you'd better quit your job cause a 2 or 3 day old track will take a while to get 2 the end. I dont waste my time on anything older than 2 and even thats rare. Todays hounds and hunting is different since the BLOOD HOUND days. Just my opinion

The lancasters seem to catch a lot of cats! Wish they would come out with another video. They have caught some nice B&C cats, and lots of Lynx

I recently had a 3/4 bloodhound and a 1/4 cameron bluetick. He had an awesome nose and treed really hard but loved to fight at the tree. That was my only complaint with him.

I agree...Quitting your job to walk into trees sounds like a perfect idea to me...I'm about over working anyhow! :beer

Maybe just finding a dog that could move a bit quicker on those 2 day old tracks and you could have your cake and eat it too?!

Its good to hear the replies,

but look heres my situation, I have a young bloodhound female. Shes a great dog, and eager to go. I bought her with papers, to train her myself and breed her as well. The breeders I bought her from, breed/ train for bear and such. My thoughts are, that with her eagerness/ willingness to go and seems to learn quickly, maybe she'll become a great cat dog? What if I found a stud of some sort of breed that had speed? combine her nose with another smart dog whos got speed who knows huh? I've ran drags for her and she's amazing to watch. She'll run fifty yards in or so and if the wind picks up she stands on her hind feet like a bear walk or something, and winds the scent drag. I've tried to trick her a few times, however, it seems like after she does a couple of those stances on her hind feet, she pinpoints that damn drag like she has GPS on the damn thing. Just wondering if I'm the only crazy son of B. to try and run a bloodhound on cat.

Maybell, is 100% pure full blooded AKC registered bloodhound, out of Missouri. Although I purchased her through a breeder here in MI.
