Garmin and Beep Box

ive been reading up on these garmins and im thinking about getting one. i was just curious of how many of you trust just the garmin and if you still run the beep collars with the garmin?

If you are going to buy one system Just buy yourself a beep beep. I run the garmin and a Marshall collar. I use them everyday and would never concider just running the gamin alone. I have lost dogs with the garmin and could have never found without the beep beep.

All I run is the garmin collars anymore. Then I got the only good ones ever made!

ive got a beep beep, Mr.pacojack that is what i was wondering,

also what kind of range can ya get out of the garmin running it off the vhf antenna?

It depends on the day, the weather, the moon. But serious the is no rhime or reason for the range you will get. Once I got 7 miles for a few seconds but I can depend on a half mile and if I am lucky I get a mile. I have been sitting next to the dog and lost the communication.They are just not that dependable yet.

I currently run both quick track and garmin. The garmin is a whole lot more fun. You can see what your dogs are doing, where there are going, where they have been and which dogs are taking charge. I truly love the garmin. Its quick tracking ability is great. It certainly has given me a better idea of what the dogs are really up to when they are outa sight. Learning how the dogs work together or lack of. I certainly helps put the story of the race in better perspective. As apposed to getting there at the end and discussing what everyones theory was as to how it all went down before we got there. Drawback with the garmin is its legality here in california and its failure to be reliable. It will shutdown, battery will die, lose signal or the gps tracker will simply forget the frequency of a collar. Also as I have recently noticed from previous posts that if you are using radio communication that uses vhf frequency it will short out or fry the gps recievers as the interfearance is too much for the garmin units. I still have my quick track collars on the dogs and bring the box for a back up. I dont trust the garmin alone.

I hunt kill season in northern Wisconsin in our national forest, we just finished up our kill season. I ran both collars on my dogs, never once did I get out my beep beep for my dogs. That being said I will still probably run both collars on my dogs.

I don't have a garmin yet, call me old fashion, beep works for me. I have two hunting buddies have them, both burned up a couple, always charge or forgot to charge them, forgot which collar has the right Id. they have more collars then memory on the garmin, a lot of jerking around to get the hunt going. With that being said, a few of them on your pack, or lead dogs is great. Helps with roads, exact location etc. In strange territory wonderful, but I also see them driving around, looking at the map, all day, not out listening to the dogs, figuring whats going on etc. It helps the average hunter look good. To me the fun is listening to the dogs, are they cold trailing, jumped, bayed, treed, the track broke down, dogs run out, etc. I guess each to his own. LOL

I run from 1 to 10 dogs at the time. I prefer to run 3 to a pack but some times when you repack you end up with more than you would like. (But it sure is pretty music) I find if I only have 1 dog out I notice the trouble with the collar more. If I am running more dogs you don’t notice the collar losing signal as much because you still have the others on screen and when you get close again it picks up. I always run Quick track and Garmin. I just got my fried unit back a few weeks ago and it works better then ever. But 2 miles is now what I expect with the long rang antenna. About half that with the regular antenna. I have had to use the telemetry collars many times to find dogs also wearing the Garmin. In February I was hunting and could hear my dogs but could only get them once in awhile with the Garmin (they were about 800 yards) after that they went to the middle of the block and all I could get them on was the quick track. I ended up getting the dogs the next day by walking in with the quick track. They were only 2 miles from where I last got signal on the Garmin and another road went about 700 yards from the dog. But by the time I got the dog the Garmin was dead. I WILL NOT RUN JUST GARMIN UNTIL THEY BECOME MORE RELIABLE. But I do love the Garmin.

Garmin has saved me many dogs already but without running both collars it would be up to chance as to how many it would have cost me.
