In hoghunting, is breed important to you?

This may be a stupid question but the hog hunting section seems to get pretty slow in here at times. How important is having a specific breed of dog, cur or hound to you when you are looking at getting, owning or breeding hog dogs? I have essentially created my own cur. I could care less about its breed. I have bred my best to my own or others best dogs. Regardless of their breed. I can track back whats in the dogs over the years as to what breeds they have in their bloodline.
I know a guy who has bred his catahoula to another guys catahoula. Would you prefer having a purebred catahoula with questionable "Hunting" or no history. or have a completely mixed hog dog of many breeds that have a long line of successful parents and relatives? Just curious.
They guy I know that bred his catahoulas basically had to give away the last 8 out of the 10 origional pups. I havent heard of a single one turning out. They guy by the way isnt anybody who posts in here so Im not trying to pull a "dry snich" on anybody.
I know in many areas the terrain and size of the areas people will hunt may influence the breed of dog but in general, Does the breed of the dog in hog hunting really matter to you and why?

i don't believe that is a stupid question at all! Where we hunt we use mostly hounds! Plotts for the most part but the best hog dog i have ever had was 1/2 black and tan 1/4 plott and a 1/4 airedale. But there is good and bad in all breeds! But i myself would prefer a mixed proven dog to a dud pure bred!

Good Question... I use nothing but mix breed dogs for my hog hunting. I have a lot of friends in the cattle business that buy expensive dogs to run on cattle. Some of these high dollar mixed breed dogs just dont work out for these ranchers for whatever reason, so I'll get the call to come get the dog... I have 4 now that i couldnt begin to tell you what they are in detail. I know they look like austrailian sheppards, mixed with catahoula. They are really good hog dogs. I can cast them out and they will usually stay within 500 yards or so, and if they dont find a hog within a half hour or so they will come right back to the truck. I've been thinking about breeding my best dog with a hound just to get more nose on them but Im not sure if they need it...

Yea thats true about the papers! Can't argue with that! Even though 3 out of four of my plotts are papered dogs! Papers just sit in a folder! But i believe diff ppl can get along better with one breed compared to another! Some of the best dogs are mixed for sure! I always tell my friends hunt what makes you happy!

Rather than breed I prefer a perticular style of dog to hunt the country I hunt most of mine are mixed breed, though I do have one pur bred at the moment that works well for me.

The country I hunt is hilly open forest or farm land that runs down step valleys. we find most of our pigs up high, so we need dogs with a fare bit of running dogs in the mix so we can stop the pigs before they get to far down the hill, find em fast, catch and holdem hard dogs work the best for us.

Like huntintony our dogs range out about the same distance so silent dogs work best for us. until caught then the bailers open up and let us know where they are.

My current dog lead dog is kemmer stock and catahoula. Ive kept that line going for a while. My hunting partners have twice as many dogs as I do and hunt almost twice as much as me and my female is usually the dog to follow. Currently Im breeding her back to her own line with 1/2 of it is a mix of plott and airedale. The male looks surprisingly like her, tan in color and a smooth coat not a wirehair, and has the same silent range of about 800 to 1000 yards. He is a little more gritty and has a little better build. She was bred in the beginning of august and I think all of the pups are spoken for. If there are any leftover im gonna post em in here. I dont want much for them I just wanna try to cover the money for the food and shots. I could care less about breed. Ive always looked at performance first. My luck they will all be culls or the one that i dont keep always turns out to be the better of the dogs. Anyhow its 2:45 am right now. I just got home from hunting and I drank too many red bulls tonight. I better get to bed, think I will call in sick tomorrow.

I like the crossed up dogs as well as the pure bred dogs, I have a few crossed up dogs right now and they do just fine, my pure bred Plott's do just fine to for me. But if I were to say what breed I like the best it's a toss up between the Catahoula and the Plott, I think those are the best two hog dog breeds out there, but the key word is " I " so dont jump all over me LOL. I did try a Kemmer that was a bad ass dog though, that dog had no fear, thats why he's no longer with me though. But when it comes right down to it, the best hog dog in the woods is the one catchin hogs.

I dont think any breed is better than the next. I think that it is mainly the training the dog gets. I run curs, dogos, pits, cats, and many mixs. If the dog has drive then it will make for a good working dog with the proper training.

I'mno expert but we run mainly catahoulas cause the line we run hunts good and are rough as a cob they dont have any papers and cant read anyway, i got one dog who is 1/2 pit and his momma was a bluetick/redbone he is just a pup but so far i like him, my only advise is if you like what you got hunt it till there feet are sore then linebreed as much as possible and you will keep it

Breed is not that important in hog hunting. I have seen plenty purebreds on hog including labrador retrievers, b&t coonhounds, american indian dogs and australian koolies.

i think it is good to have a dog with a little bit of back ground but i took one of my squirl dogs run hogs one of my friends coon dogs will run the hair off hogs
