East Wind
I have heard all my life if u have an east
wind, u will have a poor hunt that night.
After hunting so many years, I do believe
the east wind does make a difference.
Now from all u smart hunters, why is this so.
I believe the game sleep in more & scenting is not the best.
I am not saying u can,t catch game, it is usally not the best night.

Re: East Wind
I'm guessing the east wind drys up the track, I know working in the woods if the east wind blows in the summer the foresters shut ya down becuase it drys everything out fast and they're worried about fires starting.

Re: East Wind
Hipshooter,
Generally an East wind is because of a High pressure system over you which tends to lower the humidy levels as well. As another poster just said this drys the surface and Dad feels is causes the scent to disapate or rise higher than the Hounds can smell.
Just our thoughts!

Hipshooter,
Congrats on the Big Tom! Hope Andy helped!
East wind and full moon make finding and trailing Cat hard, even when you have plenty!
We found only one Cat Thur. night into Fri. morning(big Tom ran 40 min. pulled a Mike Tyson, did not work out well for him) found only one last night into this morning(old hard running Sow, ran 1:50 after trailing her 1:15 over 2.25 miles).
Call when you get your Chip and I will help!

Re: East Wind
I think it applies to most game. Old saying -wind out of east, fish bite the least. I knew of this long before I had hunting dogs. Heard of it ever since, with hounds and bird dogs.

Hipshooter, I am in Norton. I try to be a cat hunter when I have time. Someday, I hope to have my stuff together by the time I retire that I can really enjoy it.

Do u have a lot of cats?

Re: East Wind
Hipshooter,
We have had bad EAST wind since Sunday. Can run one if hit him smoking hot but can not trail!
Ran two Monday night, Rig dogs winded both off of the side of the road. Put first one in a Log pile next to the road after a fast and furious 20 min. Race, saw Cat three times.
Second Rigged smoking hot right off road, Hounds left running hell out of him, did that to him for an hour and ten minutes in and out of the water in a Cypress Swanp. Cat pulled a reall good water trick, got a lead and left out of the Swamp headed right to a main road. Loose was only a very few minutes yet Hounds went to trailing on the pick up and track got worse and worse till they got to the road then nothing. Elapsed time from running like they were going to catch him to nothing less tha 10 min. East wind blowing about 12 MPH!
Guess Hounds got sorry as hell in Ten Minutes!
