The Stock Yards up this way (Davenport,Wa) had to start locking the gates at night to keep people from dumping them off at night, they charge $50.00 to put them in the auction. I thought I read somewhere that they are unable to put horse meat in dog food anymore. Could be wrong...................

mike : You bring up some very good points . Not sure if this also is an issue out west but in the SE part of the USA Feral dogs are really turning into a problem. Now I can understand people running up against economic hard times but I guess there are SCUMBAGS in all walks of life.Perhaps your point about old DOBBIN is correct , I suppose that if I saw a horse in DURESS on National forest land I would not hesitate to do the humane thing. Though sometimes keeping your mouth shut can save you some aggravation. i recall an incident at our camp in maine . It seems the Moose were getting a disease / Brain parisite causing them to go blind and killing them .You were to notify warden service if any were spotted .They would come out and put the moose down .Well I found one kept walking into trees all cut up bad ,bleeding profusely . I did what I thought was the right thing to end its suffering . I called the warden service told them what I had done " STUPID ME " Next morning about 5:00 am in pulls 2 wardens looking for me .Well the 4 other guys in our group and my son argued that it was the right thing to do . well after Feeding these wardens they told us to take them to the carcass ,no guns allowed .We hike down there at first light and it was quite obvious the moose was in duress when I put it down. They still wanted to arrest me , but fortuneately one warden made a comment he would have done the same thing . I / We got a ROYAL ass chewing from them but they elected to drop the charges. LESSON LEARNED sometimes better to keep your mouth shut. Althoug If I had seen the same thing again I would do it again.
Mike I know the Fed Govmint has the adopt a horse / burro program Are the burro's a problem in your area or is that a Nevada, Arizona thing ?

Its true around here, we have found several dead (not bait piles intentionally just dead) horses during work in the past year or so. Have seen some loose too. I don't agree with the wild horse welfare system and I don't agree with banning slaughter...sure inject them and incinerate them while people and other animals go hungry...but by god we won't kill a horse, dog or cat for consumption in this country. No we are supposedly better than that (whatever 'that' is) in this country. My dad used to catch mustangs off the Skedaddle range before the days of Wild Horse Annie, some they broke most the sold to the killers, but then he had to eat horse meat to survive during the depression so maybe real life had helped form his opinion of what right and wrong supposedly is. Unfortunatley as someone already mentioned it has become so hard to ship and slaughter them that people have quit doing it and started dumping them.
I sure hope the rez's do get into the slaughter program, most of us had no problem with eating horses...and what an awesome way to thumb our red noses at the animal rights do gooders that think we are all so groovy.
I'm rambling on...
By the way, those of you who are talking about killing horses yourselves and or slaughtering them for dog food...shut your mouth before you get in trouble...in most states anymore that is an convictable animal cruelty charge...I know IT'S STUPID..but I'm just trying to give you a heads up!

Liz: I am only saying that if I came upon a horse that was in severe duress that I would do the humane thing .Certainly would not put one down in any other situation.Just sad to me that scumbags would release them into the wild just to get rid of them.

Oh, I think most anyone would do the right thing...i'm just saying be careful what you say about it. I know someone that was tried for animal cruelty and illegal dispatch of a firearm for putting a colicing mare down.

while sitting in the stands at a local rodeo today this came up with a friend....he raises some nice horses......can't sell them for what they are worth and the auction price is meat price because the meat buyer is who's buying....at extremly low prices.(Canada)

this deal of yours has collapsed Canada's base horse rates well... Dale was telling me that the slaughter houses out of Sask go down into the dakotas and fill up a cattle train every three days with horses pulled off BLM for free.

My brother and sister in law have sold most of their foals each year on the internet. They always put there brand on each one in the form of a freeze brand. However a year ago the state of Georgia found a horse with their brand tied to a utility pole (we are in western S. D.). My brother had to prove that the horse wasn't theirs as the state of Georgia was trying to hold them liable. Since then my brother no longer brands anything they plan to sell!

Horses all over the country are worth zilch. I picked up a 9yo red dun gelding, ranch horse in Hermiston, OR for $300. He's a super nice horse. We've been given a couple of nice horses and a couple of mules. Colts are sellin' for a whoppin' 10-20 bucks at the sale in St. Onge, SD. I think the pots hauling up to Canada are visiting the sale yards and fillin' up for nothin. Look at websites like Equine.com or at CraigsList.Org.....hundreds of free horses all over the place, and most of 'em are old, injured and worthless. My guess is that these horses are the ones being turned out on forest or BLM ground....probably can't make the winter anyway. Good news is that the Sioux are talkin' about a kill plant in SD. Maybe we oughtta all haul a colt to the slaughter houses for private butcher....bunny lovers might get the message that it's gonna happen no matter what they do.
