Rigging question

Post by Bticked »

Thanks again to all who replied to my last posting hopefully you all wont get too irritated if I try to pick your brains some more. Ok here goes. My female seems like she would be a natural rig dog, shes very vocal, always the first to bark when a cat is wondering around the neighborhood. Well she was riding on the atv rack this weekend and sure enough I was driving slow and she went nuts, scared me actually. Well I put a more trustworthy dog down and by now they were all barking but he never got on anything. Just kinda wondered around smelling but never opened up or took trail to anything. I eventually went through this like 3 more times. Now my dogs are still a bit trashy but not 2 hours earlier I saw a deer and put her down on it, she didnt bark but wanted to start to trail it, she got a good shocking and came right now. Do you all this she is barking to be a pain in the ass or does she just catch whiffs of something good that none of them can ever line out?

A couple of things could be going on here. If she isn't completly trash broke, she could be striking trash and drawing the others into striking as they see your body language, excitely searching for tracks, and getting another dog down.
It could be she is striking the prefered game, but only getting a faint whiff on the wind, or a small pocket of scent hanging in a cool shadey area, but has evaporated outside of that small area.
Just putting another dog down is good, IF the dog has also smelled the scent and knows to go into the area from which it was coming until he finds the source of the scent. That may require going 1/2 mile some times. I would work on trash breaking at every opportunity. Set her up with a confirmed trash runner, or couple of trashy pups to tax her resolve to the limit until she will come to you when they start trashing. Coyote are as bad as deer and elk for a lot of trash runners. set her up on yotes also
