bear dogs

Post by robbyson99 »

My hounds been running pretty hard and has been loosing weight! He's eating just fine and he doesn't have worms from what I can tell. What should I do or what should I buy to help him keep his weight on during hunting season? Another question I was wondering is if there's anything I can do for my hound after he's done for the day. He ran hard for 6.5 hours on thursday by himself. Treed once but the bear jumped when we got bout half way there and he was gone. Lost it but he's been sleeping sense then. Didn't know if there's something I should do for him to help him recover after a run

You can also get raw pizza dough from the local pizza joint. Feed him a golf ball size piece every day. Gives them good energy and puts the fat on them quickly.

When you are hunting your dogs hard, cut there kibble type feed in half and feed them raw meat along with the kibble.
A good way to go is feed them a whole raw uncooked chicken thigh, 2 tablespoons regular high fat yogurt, and 3 oz of chicken livers and gizzards. Cut your kibble type feed in half and mix these two together. You will see a big difference in your dog and his performance. Also for sore muscles give your dog some high quality " Ester C " vitamin C.
Hope this helps you

During season I keep all the fat and bones off of the deer and bear we get and feed that to them and it helps alot after the weather turns cold and we're hunting hard. Mike

I agree with everything above. Just keep in mind that if you are running hard day in and day out, your dogs are going to get run down. Also different dogs handle the abuse differently. I have one dog that you give everything he wants and more and he is still going to get run down by the end of the season; and most of the rest that can run day in and day out without much of an issue. Just make sure you get to know your dogs well enough to know which ones need how much recovery.

Also if you can keep them out of the hot hot weather during recovery time then it seems to help mine.....

Buy good dog food, and up the amount till they stay the right weight and bypass all the other BS listed.I feed Purina Pro Plan no weight problems at all. It costs more than the others but it is the best and with the points program it all works out. I had enough points to buy a new garmin and 4 collars. Theres a reason cheap dog food is cheap. I feed 3.5 cups of Performance when running cats hard in the winter.

Get on thier web site and look. You get so many points for each pound of food you buy.I saved up my points and had enough for 3 500.00 dollar gift cards from Cabela's

I feed Purina as well and have saved all the coupons but have not cashed in anything as yet. They also get a little raw from time to time when we kill a lion or bear, meat, bones guts and whole thing!

Something that I have noticed is that most guys only feed once a day.
Give those dogs a little to go on in the morning before you load up and as long as you are using good quality feed you are gonna do just fine.

Thank you guys for the help. I feed purina now. Have for years. My question is do you have to be a liscenced kennel to do the points system? I think I looked into it a while back and thought that was how it worked. But the concept is great. I have a bunch of frozen beavers too so I may give him a chunk of that once a week or something
