what are the typical color phase bobcats you get when you are lucky enough to tree? I typically get the brown but once in a while they have a reddish tint. I have yet to get the greyish colors yet.

We see a lot of variation in the color of the Bobcats We run across the Southeastern States. They range from Grey with faint spots to dark reddish brown with black spots.

We find the same Color phases in FL. as OK, AR,TX, MS, AL, GA, & NC with no one color phase having precedance over any other it varies from Cat to Cat.

Seasonal changes seem to have little or no affect on the color of the Cat!

Same with the physical form of the Cat, some will be square and boxy and not as tall; the next will be long legged and thin in body type. Males and females both tend to follow the above with no sex tending to be of one or the other type!

Color phases vary throughout the range of the bobcat as does physical characteristics. In my area bobcats are general referred to Rocky Mountain lynx by fur buyers. They are heavier built and have shorter tails than many of the southern bobcats oberved. Mature cats males especially generally have ear tufts somehat like that of the Canadion lynx although no nearly as long. Just as they coats of many animals vary by season in the mountains and high desert so it is with the local cats. These phases are most easily observed with deer whose coats are short and nearly red in the summer months but blend to the gray winter colors as they days begin to shorten.Cougars and bobcats in these high elevations also blend more to the rufous colors as they fur thickens for the fridgid winter temperatures. the contrast of the underside of the cats becomes much more pronounced as they hair up for winter. The cats of Northern New Mexico and the higher elevations of Nevada generally top the fur markets for best color contrast and density. We have seen some $6-700. cats come out of this area in the high demand fur years.

Any one ever see a bobcat that was black. I had a guy tell me about seeing one but I brushed it off. Sounded to me like another PA mountain lion story.

Here are the latest bits of info on the only confirmed Black Bobcats found in North America! They are in South Florida in the Miami area and have been found in about 5 Counties.

That is cool. I really did not expect a legit response. Thanks for that. The guy that told me about the cat was a trapper and said it was with a normal color bobcat. I guess maybe it could be possible. Probably not in PA though.
