QUESTION ABOUT A WHOOPED OUT DOG?

Post by creekman »

I HAVE A COMING 7 YEAR OLD PLOTT FEMALE OWNED HER SINCE SHE WAS A PUP. THIS DOG STARTED OUT RUNNING AND TREEING HER OWN COON THEN AT BOUT 1 1/2 I STRAIGHT BEAR AND HOG HUNTED HER. SHE HAS BEEN ON NUMEROUS BEAR TREES AND HOG KILLS AND ALWAYS DID OUTSTANDING SHE HAS BEEN CHEWED UP AND CUT UP MORE TIMES THEN I CAN COUNT. I DECIDED TO SELL HER AND GAVE THE MAN A TRIAL HE CALLED AND SAID SHE WOULDNT DO ANYTHING. I GOT HER BACK AND PUT HER IN A HUGE HOG LOT WE GOT AND SHE ACTED SCARED OF THE HOG. IS IT COMMON FOR A PROVEN DOG THIS OLD TO GET WHIPPED OUT? IF SO IS THEIR ANY HOPE FOR HER OR JUST NEED TO CULL HER?

Maybe try not hunting her for awhile or not feeding her for a couple of days and then let her on a hog or a bear and see how she does. Or take her out and let the other dogs on a hog or bear and dont let her out to go after it, see if that gets her going.

it sounds like the dogs that were packed into her on that mean hog might have had a different agenda.
a 7 year old dog is not going to quit what she has been doing because of one bad hog.
maybe two bad dogs ???????????

Yep, dogs aren't machines, but rather living, dynamic, malleable critters that do the things they do in response from something that has happened to / with / near / about them.

*Something* has affected her courage.....give some time and a few easy hunts to get back in the groove of things. You had mentioned that she hadn't been hunted in a while. My guess is that she'll come around.

I APPRECIATE IT FELLARS I'M GONNA GIVE HER SOME TIME AND SEE. I GUESS U COULD SAY I HAVE LEARNED MY LESSON ON SELLING A DOG WITH TRIAL. FROM NOW ON I IMAGINE IF THEY WANT A TRIAL IT WILL HAVE TO BE WITH ME TAGGING ALONG.

You might want to try getting her back into is on a sure thing. Catch yourself a little 20 pound piglet. Throw her and the piglet in a bay pen and see what she does. Whatever may have happend, haveing one of those little footballs running in front of her should be something she cant resist.

The guys dogs might have jumped on her, which I have seen before and it can really mess the dog up. I always give any new dog I buy a couple of weeks to get used to me and the other dogs in my pack before I go on the "trial" hunt. But then again, I only buy dogs I have already seen hunt. I hope she comes back around for you.

My guess is she was chewed up real good, but not by a game animal. Listen to these guys who are telling you about the other mans dogs. Most bear dogs that get chewed up and even killed, haven't even been close to the bear, believe me! It sounds good to tell about how old super duper died fighting that bear but check him over and see where all the damage was done. If it was on the face, head, neck ect., my money is on a dog fight. If the other fellow was stupid enough to be running a female in heat with males, I will almost guarantee a dog fight. Don't think dog men would be that stupid? Go to a field trial, or nite hunt and see how many females are getting attention.

cab, I have to agree and dis-agree with your post, for the most part my hounds get cut or bad bites in the hind quarter area , but its nothing new to see those little pencil like holes in the top of there head where they get slapped, if a bear new the kind of damage they do with there claws I'am sure they would use them more than they do, as for females , I have seen very few males that would really fight a female, you take a old crankie bitch, they will not put up with the ass sniffing very long before they lay the ivory to somthing, and those male dogs know what there getting it for and the quit the sniffing and riding, the first 17 or 18 years of my hound hunting I used anything and everything this last 17 or 18 years I have used only cut males , I have no problems, at the tree,in the box, in the kennel, it don't matter where there at, all they want is to hunt, sleep or eat and that is the way I like it. I do not make them my friend, there more like a employee, they have a job and I have a job and when everybody does there job we win. then we go home rest and eat and do it all over again tomorrow. as the old hound guys would say, the best cat hound I ever owned was bear whipped , and the old cowboys would say , the only thing a stallion or a mare is good for is to make a good gelding. read between the lines you can figure it out.
