Local Famous Dogs
Sorry I kind of stoke this idea from pete richardson on those board, hope he doesnt mind. Was curious of famous dogs that are pretty much only famous around your area or your part of the country? Could be around your town, state, region, doesnt matter. Just want to hear about some of them. I know we have some around here but would like to hear about what breed they are and what they are ran on, etc.

Re: Locally Famous Dogs
there is a black n tan plott cross named tank making him a hell of a name in these parts. they say he can catch bear on his own and fill more bobcat tags than a man can have. never seen him in action to much personally but words gets around in a small town. they say he may not be that one in a million dog but he is at least one in a thousand... maybe big game hunter will jump in and tell you a little more about his breeding seeing how he gets the privaliage of feeding such a fine animal...
never doubt the dogs

Re: Locally Famous Dogs
So its his dog huh? We have a few locally, wish mine were in the same category, haha. I can think of 3 walkers that are pretty good. One is the sire of one of my pups who is doing awesome on bear at 7 months old. The other 2 are my buddies dogs, both are small walker females. I know there are some more around just dont know their names.

Re: Locally Famous Dogs
No one else huh? I know some people have seen some pretty amazing dogs that they would like to share. Lets hear about them!
Re: Local Famous Dogs
I can think of a few dead and still alive. Bruce Horrocks had a old blue dog named newt that was one super neat sucker on bears he caught a bunch all by himself and had a huge heart and would stay all day on a bear. Dennis Ingram has one heck of an old dog he calls Ryan, I have hunted with him and talked to a couple guys that hunted with him and they told me he was a double tough sucker, Dennis and Bruce both have a bunch of nice dogs that have made a name for themselves in my oppinion. Hal Mecham has a few right now that are top notch dogs on bear and lion both, he has one he calls chip, and one he calls taz that are super good suckers and worth a bunch of money, it seems like everyone around here wants a pup out of those dogs of Hal's. I had three femals I just sold that in my oppinion made a pretty good name for themselves also, around here, Lucky, echo, and skittles was as nice of bear, lion and bobcat dogs as a guy could ask for, I loved those three dogs and they taught me a lot about hunting I'm very thankfull for those dogs. Brad Evans also has some good dogs, but the ones that stick out to me the most is duster, keno and skyler all very good dogs. good thread keep up with the input, i like to here about good dogs from the past and now.

Re: Local Famous Dogs
Glad to hear people chiming in finally. That Ryan dog does look like he gets in there on a mean lion no problem in some of those pictures. I know a guy around here that I never got to see in action that was a awesome dog on everything I guess but got killed by a Tom lion. Guess it was a pretty gutsy dog and did a lot on his own. My buddy had a dog from Travis Stirek (think i spelled that wrong) up in Tonasket, Wa named Kid Rock who was becoming an awesome dog. That dog is the dog that got me hooked, treed a big bobcat in about 3-5 mins. Travis has some good dogs it seems.

Re: Local Famous Dogs
Would that be Shorty's Renegade?
If so, I am considering breeding my Aspen to him.
An old Walker dog by the name of Ike. Another canidate I've considered breeding to, if he only had his papers (registerd dog, just no papers)

Re: Local Famous Dogs
Well Bad Moon...you know how stories go in a small town.....
Ole Tank is a pretty neat dog though. He and my little Nacho dog make a pretty good team on bears, lions and bobcats. Not sure why Tank gets most of the credit but Nacho does her fair share also. If I could keep some others from getting taken out by mean bears, I might be able to get a decent pack going one of these days!
I've often wondered about how our local dogs stack up against other "famous" more well known dogs around the country. I've known some others from around here that I would give my left leg to own. Kilroy, Spade, Tucker, Jigs, Molly just to name a few. All of these dogs were hunted by houndsmen who were not guides and hunted mostly by themselves locally. Makes a guy wonder if they would be part of that "legendary" well-known crowd if they had more human exposure............I am sure there are dogs like that in every location???

Re: Local Famous Dogs
Thats kind of exactly why I started this thread BGH. I know of a few local dogs that I would love to have and that are great dogs! Makes you wonder huh. I know people have great dogs but some of the local blood might be just as good or better then some well known stuff, its always hard to tell unless somehow you put one up against the other
Re: Local Famous Dogs
i ment no harm in leaving your little nacho girl out bgh, i have heard good about her as well. as far as famous local greats i have often wondered the same you. you take a look at dogs like tank or zeus and hear of all there accomplishments and wonder how much better can it get?
i did see you mention kilroy in there, that is one hound spoken highly of by several people. wish i could of been around to see him in action.
while were speaking of greats did you wind up with one of them pups out of zero?

Re: Local Famous Dogs
Are these dogs that you're talking about walkers, blueticks, plotts, etc.? Just curious on what type of dogs were looking at here. Pictures would be good to. Just to see some of these dogs.

Re: Local Famous Dogs

One of the more famous dogs around here was called huckleberry I believe. He was a crossbred hound that could catch his own lion, bear or bobcat--and do it all with style! I heard tell one time he ran around one of those young, running bears and was sitting around the bend taking a pizz waiting on that damn bear to get there. Yup, ol' Huckleberry was a damn good hound!
Just joking gang!

Re: Local Famous Dogs
3 dogs come to mind from reading this... Dogs that deserve some recognition because they shined brighter than the rest, but won't ever get it because their owners are humble guys that just like to catch game. In no particular order, here they are.
1- A male Star Mountain bred Plott dog owned by my friend O. Midzinski. His STOKEY dog was a cut above the rest and sure did some amazing stuff. He was a cold trailing, game finding fool, that pulled many "Tricks out of his bag" and usually ended up treed, with the meat. He wasn't a perfect hound, but I would've fed him
. He caught game with ease and style up into his later years. He also produced very well and there are many dogs in that area, catching game that have his blood running through their veins. There wasn't a lion, bear, bobcat or coon that was safe in Cache Valley when he was loose. He caught game in tons of other places, but mostly in Cache Valley.
2- A Female mixed up bred, Walker lookin' Hound dog my buddy owns right here in Central Utah. J. Sorensen owns this female named JESSIE. She has also done some miraculous things that I have been witness to. She has also produced some very nice hounds that some very hard hunters own and are very proud to load up. She is the kind of dog you hope to have along when things get tough. She's caught more than her fair share of lions, bears, bobcats and coons with company, or alone. She's the type of dog I think any serious hunter would love to own.
3- A male Kemmer Mountain Cur, Striker bred, owned by another good friend in Southern Nevada. B. Swanson is lucky enough to dump this dog out and has caught lot's of lions, bears, bobcats and coons with COUGAR and he too, has produced many fine big game catching dogs. I saw this dog trail a lion in the dry dirt of May, in Southern Nevada, ahead of a few nice Utah dogs of mine like he was tied to a Top Fuel Dragster. He's gritty as they come and will catch, more than he won't.
All of these dogs have one thing in common, they belong to guys that get out and hunt, HARD! They don't make excuses for their dogs and all know what a top, game catching dog looks like. I feel very lucky to have seen these dogs in action and am also proud to call these men and dogs, friends.
Take care.

Re: Local Famous Dogs
Wow,famous thats a very tall order.
I can think of many dogs around these parts that were or are very very good.Dogs that can really do it all and do it with class.Track, tree, strike, bay you name it I would gladly own em all.
Maybe the best of all of these dogs was the product of a very unlikely cross that just had all of the right ingredients and produced a super star in every way. This dog is the foundation of many of the best dogs running the hills around here today. All of these dogs posses the one thing that truly sets them apart from the crowd and that is heart, unbelieveable heart. When the going is tough and I mean get down and dirty hour after hour tough, day after day, thats the kind of heart I am thinking of,not too many have it.
A proven reproducer that has sired many big game hounds of superior character,Bronc.
